I'm 40 in 2 years time, and while I'm not dreading it, I'm not entirely happy. I recently moved near my old home town and every corner brings back a memory of good times - the daft kind, that as a married father of two, I will never experience again.

20 yrs old seems 10 minutes ago, and 30 only minutes. Before I know it I'll be dead, and it'll all be over - what the fuck.

I don't know why I started this thread but, perhaps what I mean is, all those who are young, cherish every moment, because nearly everything you do or say will affect your life forever; the girl you don't date, the job you don't take, the holiday you don't go on - they can all dictate the pattern of your life.

And those nearer my age - drink in every expression on your kid's faces, regret nothing, and do something mad - soon.

I'm 40 in July. Midlife crisis up and running and gathering speed...:)

It really sunk in for me when I left uni and started a graduate position. Now that i'm finished as a graduate I thought:

"is this it until i retire? this sucks..."

and then:

"if i marry my girlfriend, only one vagina for the rest of my life?!"

/cue panic.

Everyone had moments like this, my suggestion is try to stop thinking about it so much. I once had a strange sensation when thinking about when the sun runs out of power and detroys the earth. The concept was very disturbing, but then i stopped thinking so much and just went about everyday as normal, looking at as much pornography and driving as fast as possible.

Im 20, and 21 in a few months. I even feel old.

I was at work in EB a few years ago, and some kid almost bumped into me, and the mother said, watchout you almost hit that man over there, and i was thinking "no not man, should be kid! man isn't till 25".

Lester is not unhappy. Hes just wondering, like, wtf?
Im 41 just gone. Whats all that about? I have a pretty busy job, where I have the power to behave exactly how I like. But I still think jesus, if only these 20 year old kids new, that being double their age is like a heartbeat away. Im sure some of these youngsters look at me and think Im old, yet to me Im just the same as them, in my mind. Its perplexing stuff.
What you DONT need to do, young Lester my friend, is divorce your wife, buy a gay red sports car, and dye your hair.
THIS WILL NOT CHANGE FUCK ALL.
Id say enjoy what you do, enjoy who you are, and get on with it. Life is too short for regrets, and you and me should know this only too well :D

Linx said happy birthday to me last night (nearly 2 months late, and was even aiming for someone else) and I thought I'd forgotten about all this and could be miserable about more important problems. :(

Lester has never been one for flashy cars, remember that Merc you bought?

I feel awful at 32, it really was only yesterday that I was 21, I remember every word and action from my 21st birthday(and I was rat arsed).

When you are young your birthdays can't come quick enough, I remember almost exploding waiting for my 7th birthday because I was getting a Grifter.

Now my birthdays come and go in a blur.

I am in the process of giving up smoking, that I will do this time, this time its different, this time I have a son who I want to see grow up. Of course I won't be able to do much with him due to me being 28 stone but its worth the risk.

Life is too short by far, enjoy it while you can for its gone too soon.

All this on the day I am going to my aunties funeral, hate this time of year.

I am in the same boat Lester, 40 in, shit its less than two years now, 2 kids, mortgage relatively interesting and well paid job.

I found out the other day though that I am old, I slipped quietly into the demographic that does not get nightclub flyers thrust at them as they walk down Northumberland Street. I don't regret many of the things I have done, I don't yearn for previous years, I look at the kids, and between fits of wanting to strangle them and hug them, I think yes you have a reasonable life.

All sounds a bit glum. The average life expectancy for a man is about 76 so I think you have a way to go yet.

I did get a bit of a shock though, when I took my son to Uni for a look around and saw just how young the students are. Since I can do pretty much what I want to do, play computer games , eat out, get drunk, I dont think being 42 is so bad. Im not one for contemplating my impact in the grand scheme oif things (it'l all be gone in a billion yerars or so so why worry). I tend to look at my family and think about that achievement, its far more important.

I was a bit fed up a couple of years back when I hit 30 but to be honest, I kind like being in my 30's. The wife (to be!) and kids have added depth I was actually looking for in my early 20's.

There are loads of things to look forward to as you get older remember, grand kids, 2nd marriages, mid life crisis sports cars, Bolton winning the Champions league. Make your own list up!

Hell the only crap thing about being old is that impending mortality :p

Who knows we could all be dead next year after WWIII or alive a millenium from now on our 20th regeneration.

Here's too the future.

Sorry I was a bit pissed and maudlin when I wrote that. I am happy with my beer-belly, receding hairline, Saturday night sex, big mortgage, 60 hour a week job, piles, and teenage kids....oh...hang on....

You SHOULD be happy:

* beer-belly - evidence of a satisfied and self-indulgent life
* receding hairline - proof that manly testosterone is flowing through your veins
* Saturday night sex - better than no sex at all
* big mortgage - it's an investment
* 60 hour a week job - legitimate excuse to stay away from the kids
* piles and teenage kids ...

... :( ...

... OK you're on your own
