Ive just been pissin aboot with a friends PC. We took the 2gig drive as-is (complete with all the files, win98, software etc) from and old slot1 celeron m/c and fitted it in her new(er) Dell as a d: drive. Now how can she run the software off the old drive?

When you click on one of the apps, it says about cannot locate the .dll file etc. Is it possible to find the .dll's from the old drive and move them?

Does any of this make sense? Are carrots pink?

Well, when you install software it sets up various registry stuff, this is the vital missing component.

The "Move Setting" thingamagig might help, not use it myself tho.

Carrots are actually white.

Just a guess but it's going to look to the old drives OS, and you aren't running it.
Shoot me, see if I care :)

edit/ you could boot off the old drive, well maybe :)

problem then being, that drive hasnt been installed (as an OS) on the different mobo, so i would get all sorts of erorry type things.

Where in win98 is the reg settings held? Obv i cant run REGEDIT, but if i can find the registry on the old drive, that may help.

Agreed but first time it boots couldn't you set it up for the new HW?

You'll need to uninstall and reinstall any software, the registry isn't up to date. Data files can be kept on the drive.

Thats not the answer I was looking for Mellow.

Although most probably a lot quicker than going through endless reg entries and also moving various other files in to the current windows directory.

Yes, but, what if you dont have the software????

OK, so is it possible to boot from D: instead of C: (im thinking yes, select boot source in BIOS)

I don't care! :p messing about with the registry is naughty and you'll only end up destablising your system.

You are naughty plus my way is quick and easy. ;)

If you really really want to edit the registry, most installs leave a log somewhere in the directory, in that you can find all the registry changes made and duplicate them. You'd probably have to do them manually but I'd guess some clever clogs has got a spyware infested VB mockup that does it for you if you google hard enough.

You'd obviously have to change the drive designations, i.e. wherever it has got C: you replace it with D:.

This is no guarentee it will run under another version of the OS

The more extreme case is use a product like VMware, create a virtual setup under your main OS, install the other OS, then copy all the shit over.

Thanks for the faith Someguy.

What I actually did was to swap the drive channels over, so the Win98 drive became C and the XP drive was D:, this was because (aparently) for dual booting the latest OS should be installed second.

When I fired the machine up, I got all the errors you would expect because of the new hardware, installed all the new drivers, and after am afternoon spent pissing about, running upstairs to check stuff/ download drivers on my pc, then downstairs to my workshop to check her PC, everything appears to work without any problems.

Well yeah! Isn't that obvious?
