56k is measured in kilobits per second, not kilobytes per second. Your web browser displays download rates in kilobytes per second. There are eight bits in one byte. A 3-5 kilobyte download is actually the equivalent of a 24-40 kilobits per second download speed.

On my 56K modem I'm lucky to get 5-6k downloads. I'm usually in the region of 3-4k. 56k is prolly fine for Joe Public but not for us hardcore gamers and hardcore pr0n downloaders.

just for the record ur modem will download at max about 4.5k becuase thats all the phone line will handle.you could have a 96 k modem would make no difference.a mediocre modem much less than that, maybe 3-3.5?
my isdn will do about 7k single channel or about 14 with 2 bonded channels,adsl and cable modems about 50k i beleive.

45333/8=5666.625Kb/second

5666.625/1024=5.53KB/second.

remember, "B" is for byte, "b" is for bit.

The theoretical max speed for a 56Kb modem is 7KB/sec. The most I've ever seen (under Linux of course) was 6KB/sec. I average, however, between 4.5KB and 5KB.
