Erm - slight screw up in Winblows this time...

Due to yet more crashes and system cock ups I did a partial reinstall of Win95 (installer from inside windows) to try and get things back to a familier state

Howevr - little did I know that despit getting ym graphics and siund drivers to work (just) and find the mouse disk - there are a couple of problems...

1) I have IE3 (which thinks it's IE5 so keeps trying to stop me killing it)
2) I am missing loads of dlls (oleaut32.dll to name the one common culprit) Any idea whewre it comes from and what I now need to update it?
3) The display properties control panel is b0rked - can't change a thing
4) Modme may not work properly either - though I have managed to connect this time...

Erm- heeeeeelp (again)

Simple solution, one you didnt want to do, but reformat and reinstall... it helps performance too, think of it as a performance optimisation

Have you tried using the System file checker ?
It can be run from the menu of the system info program, this program tries to restore missing dlls.

oleaut.dll? HTF do you get anything done then? IIRC, you shouldn't even be able to drag/drop stuff?

I think there's an updater called OLEUPDsomething.exe (you should be able to find it on microsoft's website) that will fix that. As for IE3, search altavista for 'revenge of mozilla', it's a proggie which should be able to take out IE completely...

But basically, your best bet is to rename your windows directory and re-install...

(if you can get a 98 CD, try www.98lite.net)

Well - now after 2 days fumbling around in DOS trying to get my CD ROM working to reinstall again after recieving about 50,000 errors regarding NWREDIR and Windows crashing on startup, to eventually immobilising Safe Mode too (for good measure you see) eventually managed to reinstall and use my recovery disks.....

Only one crash so far today though!

Now.... where to find all that goddam stuff I need to get it back up to date....
