DarkSpace

not hugely popular (wich is one of the reasons i'm posting about it), free to play up to 1st rear admiral wich enables you to get 1 dreadnaught class ship from one of the factions.

ok balanced with a slight advantage towards K'luth wich have cloak but less survivability then the other 2 factions.

its basically a side project run by Richard Lyle who aparently was a bigshot in some of the older games that i've forgotten wich ones :)

its not terribly fast on updates although they do happen once in a while because the other devs thats working on it does it without getting paid for it so basically they use their free time for that and Richard has a proper job besides Darkspace that takes up most of his time.

very few ppl that actually wont answer any questions so very friendly imo.

i probably wont recomend it to be something ppl can play permanentally but it is a pretty decent past time game every now and again.

Moby games "credits" this Lyle fellow in;

SiN Episodes: Emergence (2006), Valve Corporation
Men of Valor (2004), Vivendi Universal Games, Inc.
The Settlers: Fourth Edition (2001), Blue Byte Studio GmbH
Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga (1996), Electronic Arts, Inc.
Super Wing Commander (1994), Electronic Arts, Inc.

Which kinda means nothing as he could be the guy making coffee in those games :p

About the game; well, it could be fun, but with EVE and Jumpgate out there...why pay for it?

this game has now changed to a completely free to play model with a minimal "item" store similar to what STO has, IE you buy credits and use those to buy enhancements for your ship(s) ingame.

same enhancements are dropping every now and then from other players so you don't have to buy any credits, but it does help.

worth having installed just because its free, plus it only takes up some 300 MB or so....

if anyone here does decide to try it post your screen name here and i'l send some credits your way, i got a ton when they changed to F2P because i was subbed.

/edit: which reminds me, you can still subscribe to the game (mostly because it still costs money to run it) and you get credits for the same value each month you sub.

Hmmm, looks like a fairly steep learning curve... I've a feeling I'll need to spend a day reading all the FAQ and some of the forums to get a handle on what the hell you do in the thing, and more importantly, how.

(2 ships dead, 1 smacked into the Sun before I read how the jump drive will do that, another into a planet when I didn't check the path on chasing a ship :p ).

you will park your ships on planets alot :)

word of warning tho, don't make a habit of dying, you will lose XP and can even lose levels.

so stay as far away from the big stuff as you can while still being in range with your guns.

ppl generally have little sympathy with new players and have adopted a "you learn or you die" philosophy :)

and a tip, there is a function called emergency jump (shift + j) that you can use in those "oh shit" moments. i do not recommend using that as you will not jump far enough to be untrackable.

instead press F2 and CTRL click a spot way out and jump there. then, even if they do manage to track you down your jumpdrive will hopefully be recharged again. atleast on the smaller ships, on dreadnoughts and stations if they find you after you jumped your usually toast, but thats nothing you have to worry about for a while :)

Damn you, I'm far too addicted to this game now.

Contrary to the above I am finding shift-J useful... certainly quicker than F2/click safe/wait for alignment/jump if a few Dreads have jumped you.

I'm doing OK on ranking up so far. I'm 2nd Rear Admiral, and not far off first. But I do need to work on my Transport and Bombing badges.

I kinda wish more happened in the Metaverse, but I understand that takes a lot more co-ordination as you're up against well-defended planets. Scenario is fun though, even if the fastest way to get prestige is to spend 30-60 minutes building a planet.

Anyway, if anyone's a fan of Eve and the like, but doesn't want to invest quite so much time and have the death penalties, Darkspace seems like a fun alternative.

Well, yeah, it's a gamble. Either take the second or two more to set up a longer jump and risk dying right there and then .... or shift-J, get away sooner, and risk them deciding to come after you. It all depends on who's whacking on your hull and how far down it is ....

Who are you in it btw ? I'm currently just 'Athanasius', not having any Fleet affiliation, nor wanting to show off my rank in name :p .
