Of roleplaying

As some of you may already know, our guild, The Kindred, is a roleplaying guild. As such, our characters are not merely numbers and stat sheets - we flesh the characters out with personality, quirks, history and such. In short, we try to play them as they were complete persons.
In order to do that, we also have to interact with the world outside the character, and this usually means talking with each other. As it unfortunately is, the only times we can roleplay in peace is when we're removed from the general hubbub of the game - when I've tried to roleplay in public it's always been marred with outsider comments, ranging from "Hey you sexy redhead" and "Can u sprae som gold plz plz lol" to the more destructive and distractive ones, like "Enough of that middle-aged soft-porn" and "Man u guys are l4me." Some have even set their pets to trample on us when we're trying to have a conversation.
The thing is, I don't care how do you get your kicks out of DAoC. If you like RvR or PvP or just want to be the best-equipped hunk of Championy goodness is none of my concern. Play as you see fit. But roleplaying does the thing for me, and it really bugs me off to no extent to have simpletons jump on me when I'm having a serious conversation with my husband concerning our relationship.
So, do me and the rest of us a favor:
If you do not approve of our way of playing, just ignore us. That's what I do with most of you ;)

Still a tad miffed from last night,

I agree with Auscia. It can be really frustrating when people ruin a nice conversation :(

I interrupted you and your husband once aswell A, when your husband had disappeared and my hero called Pauper saw you sobbing near Mag Mell? Since I'm now a member of The Kindred aswell, I doubt it was too annoying, though :)

I don't mind people interrupting a conversation, as long as they notice it's IC and will go away or try to blend in :)

This is actually a serious attempt to stop it, so don't ruin it with stupid jokes. Just respect us, like we respect you.

I've been a roleplayer since I was 11, I'm 29 now, hate to say it but being a roleplayer does tend to leave you as a bit of an outsider, I remember 9 people falling strangely silent when someones mother walked in the room :D

I've done live roleplaying too, which is fine when it was confined to the warehouse the events were held at. Have to accept that people view it as wierd, even after all these years as a roleplayer I know there is something frankly kooky about us!

You're right to remove yourself from the rest as much as possible, most can't resist smug comments. I must personally confess to inwardly thinking the middle age porn thing as your all buttering auscia up whenever I pass by, I roleplayed an alcoholic mage for 3 years (in shadowrun), didn't flirt with a woman once!

Think a good place would be a tavern somewhere, somewhere with little disturbances and less human traffic, always a good place to roleplay in my experience, half the warehouse in larpg was a timeout tavern area, people getting wasted and talking in character, was great fun. Maybe they should include a new tavern in the game ;)

Yes we should pick locations carefully, but still why is it necessary to stick a pet on people roleplaying?

ps. You an alcoholic mage? :D

In Everqueest you could flag yourself as a Roleplayer and as such, most people would leave you alone, or at least undedrstand why you said certain things.

For instance, as a Human Monk i would not associate myself with Dark Elves, Trolls or Ogres. If they spoke to me i would reply with something like " go away you DE Scum" or something equally abusive to them. Some would take offence to this and upon seeing i was RP, they would leave me alone.

In DAOC there is no way to differentiate between normal and Role players, there should be. I personally dont RP in DAOC for this reason but see no harm in others playing however they want to play.

...damn you, Llix, for dragging me into this.

I wrote a longish and very reasonable post about trying to keep roleplay private, being OOC when grouped with strangers, and the need to identify roleplayers reliably to the rest of the server. Then I deleted it. Because really, since this thread has 'roleplaying' in the title, the people who should read it just won't.

So I'll just say this.

I will not ask for respect: I assume it, as a basis of any human interaction not involving weapons, lawyers or sports equipment. When someone waives their right to respect by assuming standard politeness doesn't apply online, I assume the right to flame their socially challenged tails from here to Argentina, should the fancy take me. Though mostly, I just drop them in /ignore.

As for in-character, politeness be damned. Players I expect to be considerate; characters just to be themselves. =)

I personally would prefer to RP a lot more on DAOC

but like auscia said you do get looked at strangely

I sometimes pop in and out of role in the game although the majority of players do spoil this

However it has to be said that there is a rp server, which i now have a ickle friar on :D

excal is really veiwed more as just a game server, seen as im quite new i dont know if this was decided by the players or mythic.

but if more peeps who rped went on one server it might make it better for all?

IMO

Um. If you mean Pryd, it's rp-status is entirely unofficial. And to be honest, in the 2 weeks or so I spent on Pryd, I never met a single roleplayer -- all contact by other players was stubbornly xp-hunt oriented. I know they exist, but damn, they hide well... =/

ok sexeh...

Just kidding ;) I actually didn't know that kindred were an rp only guild, but then again I don't really abuse people in realm, unless it's novamir and he expects me too :D

Just treat us all like wastrel neighbours how can't really speak common tongue ;)
Kinda like Germans with a sense of humour(that was for icebreaker). hehe

I remember that one... Even tho I've personally long given up hope for RPing, kinda pissed me off that some people can't accept others being present, playing and interacting the way they enjoy -- a kiss in a game rated 11+ (when there's even an emote for it) is definately not out of line :/

... ah well, as someone said above -- it's wasted time, those whom might have a problem with others roleplaying sure as heck won't be reading any of this.
