nVidia 50 Series ForceWare Drivers

Just a little note of experience really.

I installed these over the top of 40 series Dets - like I usually do - and it resulted in a currupted nVidia control panel. Hilariously, I recieved an erorr message with only two words:

"Catastropic Failure"

I laughed, despite the bleakness of it all.

Anyway, I know we are supposed to uninstall old drivers first, and I also know that rafts of people ignore such advice. However, making the jump between Detanator and Foreceware, I'd highly recommend some more careful planning.

- If this error is not just related to me, then you can fix it by running the nVidia uninstallers from Add/Remove programs (I had two, removed them both to be sure), and then reinstall after you've restarted. Make sure you have some drivers handy for your monitor if you need them.

The problem is exactly as you said - you didn't uninstall the old driver first mate.

The route to fix is almost as you've indicated, though I'd reccomend a couple of additional steps.

[only applicable to people suffering the 'catastrophic failure' issue]

1. uninstall forceware driver -> reboot
(if you don't know which check the install dates to the right)
2. delete c:\NVIDIA
3. check c:\wutemp for other versions of NVIDIA drivers - windows update can sometimes download these and when your pc reboots the system will look there for a driver before prompting for one... delete any you find - if you miss this you'll end up in a vicious circle...
4. uninstall all remaining NVIDIA graphics card drivers in add-remove programs

after the above, you can generally reboot and just install the forceware driver, however it would be a good idea to boot into VGA mode (XP/2K) safe mode on 98/ME and check the graphics driver in the hardware manager, right-click and uninstall it if it's anything other than standard vga, reboot and then install the new drivers.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Why can't they fix their sodding drivers to uninstall properly

01. Uninstall old drivers
02. Reboot
03. Install new drivers
04. Reboot
05. Catastrophic Failure
06. Uninstall new drivers
07. Reboot
08. Windows reinstalls old drivers
09. Uninstall old drivers
10. Delete old driver from install directory
11. Reboot
12. Windows reinstalls old drivers

I just can't get rid of them. I do a search for NV and delete all the nvidia files (even ones in lastgood folder) and reboot and they just come back!

HELP :(

Ok I finally fixed it...

I found that the WUTemp folder and its 44.03 drivers kept coming back, it was redownloading them off the internet.

So I disabled the NIC and removed the 44.03 drivers again and this time it worked fine...

Bloody XP its too clever for my own good :(

I recently wanted to uninstall my NVidea drivers, so did as every one does, via add/remove. However, I saw 2 lots of drivers so uninstalled both.
Lots of headscratching later taught me that not only had i uninstalled my video drivers, but my NForce 2 ones too.
Ho hum :)

Yes indeedy, whichever muppet at Microsoft decided that this was 'best practice' needs drawing to one side so as to allow a large rusty anvil to strike him dead, after falling 8, maybe 10 floors. - bastard

Same problem has hit a lot of users - thing is it's Microsofts fault totally, but no doubt the zealots will point their finger at NV/anyone else...

The 5900 ultra is listed as supported on the nvidia page.

thats clearly a lie then coz nothing happens after the installation and then reboot.

slightly annoying

uninstalled the old ones, removed all traces of them etc. ran the new setup file, did its bits and bobs. computer needs to restart, ok great. windows loads and it says new hardware etc, vga card found. so im stcuk in a loop of pointing it to the new drivers and then nothing happening on reboot.

hurrah nvidia, hurrah

right chaps seems nvidia are at it again with a wondeful cock up

when you uninstall the nfocre drivers it deletes the registry key for your display so you cant install anymore display drivers

ive had to export the reg key from my other pc which has a similar setup (handy) and import it into my PC then i could install the nv50's

the key is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"Class"="Display"

shold be the same for most XP/Win2K

was so close to a format as that seemed the only solution, bastards.

I was going to reinstall my PC on Monday anyway, so I'll not need to worry about it.
