just thought I'd let anyone interested know that I've finally got an NTL cablemodem. Actually I got it a couple of days ago...but only got the damn thing working today!
the theory is permanent connection for about £40 per month (actually, at the moment you have to have phone & tv package, which costs about £8.60 ish (i think) as well). So a bit under £50.
Installation costs £20. You have to buy the cablemodem yourself (3com cmx) which costs £150 (and are in bloody short supply!).
After that it's just the £40 per month flat rate (+tv & phone).
Download (in theory) of up to 512kbps. Upload of up to 128kbps (they cap the rates at NTL).
So far...(only a few hours), web browsing seems nice and fast (beats a 56k modem hands down...and ISDN for that matter). Their DNS seems a bit slow. I will speak to NTL about this and possible try someone elses...
but...what about Q2? (for tis the only game I play online atm).
Well...my 1st refresh of gamespy changed the last lot of pings from a low of about 120 (pace 56k aint bad) to a low of 29!
However...pinging the BW lmctf server during the evening was varying from 35 to over 900 !
During play it was more stable. I have seen lows of 35, but highs of 180!
not too good then. but NTL are still rolling this out and I suspect have a bit to learn about packet loss....doesn't really affect web browsing at all, but a 1 sec delay in the middle of a game can be fatal (so to speak).
So...I'll let you know how it goes for those interested.
and if anyone else already has a cablemodem, or is about to, do let me know.
cya peeps
