Pioneer DVD-115

Will read CDs, and even DVD cover discs but NOT my DVD Films. (R1 or R2)

It just will not see a disc in the drive at all even in Win Explorer.

I have just upgraded the Firmware on the drive to v1.33, cleaned the thing with a Laser head cleaner and it still don't freaking work!

Again, all this shit was fine until I installed XP.

Oh, I use Power DVD ver 4.00.

Go back to 98? Fuck no!!

Win 98 lost all my registry settings and hung everytime I tried to power down. :(

Just pisses me off that M$ release bollocks like this.

surely it can't be the os Ono matey? everyone knows that M$ tests their pooducks to the highest possible standards before releasing them on us mortals :)

btw, I read in general that it is well possible that BillG is a lizard. Funny that, 'cos I thought he was a rat really :D

degrade is the word, for various reasons people feel the need to slag off XP with little or no real knowledge as to the cause of the problem - same old story. Since installing XP on our machines in the TN lab I've gotta say blue screens and crashes are getting pretty rare - last time I saw any real fux0rage was when gypsy pushed a normal geforce3 well beyond the capabilities of Ti500... heh

First question i'd ask is are you running a legit version of XP? I ask this because the recent patch MS started trialling to sort such issues with DVD support requires a valid legitimate product key on an already activated product. This is a precursor from M$ to ensure they can stamp out support for warezed versions of the devilsown iso and other mass-distributed keys.

On that note I don't know whether you're aware of this but there's been a change to the EULA for windows update which now allows microsoft to check the product key for XP. Rather scarily in the first 48 hours 3 in every 5 users which were downloading updates were using the devilsown pirate ISO key - think of the bandwidth microsoft will save when they block updates to the pirate version totally :D

Should leave BillG with more spare pocket change per month - maybe enough for them to pay some designers to put together some decent default backdrops and themes for the next service pack/incarnation of the OS aka blackcomb - I don't mind the default theme but much prefer themeing switched off and the 'look' appears to be the biggest criticism.

As to your specific problem did you have any issues pre the new firmware? We've had a similar problem with a Plextor writer recently which after a firmware upgrade coastered every cd it touched yet it reads data fine. I'd check the capacity of your coverdiscs and see if any of them aren't single layer discs - its possible that something is now stopping the drive from reading dual layer media - stick it into a friends machine possibly and see if you still have the same issues.

If it is firmware related (i.e. since the reflash) I'd try rolling back - some manufacturers do allow this. If you've de-regionalised the disc this is a symptom of de-regionalisation so you might want to hit the good 'ol 'unfuck' button and see if that helps.

Looking online I can't see anyone else with your specific problem so I'm guessing it isn't a direct XP support issue - saying that there's a good chance the XP patch could miraculously cure things... it could just be a matter of an old dll from 9x/nt/2k having been installed and the patch may well restore it...

I think we need a little more info to be more precise - have a play and see what else u can dig up and let us know ;)

Service Pack 1(SP1) is the legit key checker although its only in beta 1 form atm so not really released to the general public yet.

Did you do a complete reinstall of Xp or the upgrade?

heh, not exactly right

SP1 will be the first market-wide enforcement - there are a number of other systems in test in other patches which have appeared since the new eula went out.

For instance the DX9 betas call home when directplay is used with QOS, activation and key details.

The dvd/video patch and one other currently trial the next stage of WPA - something which has not only come to us as an official line from MS but is also something we've verified to our own satisfaction.

I did a fresh install of XP Pro.

Do I have a legit version of it? **cough** Maybe.

I am pretty certain the DVDRom is b0rked now. It ran on Win98 but was not perfect.

As for my other problem with the Logitech Webcam - I am going to test it on another XP'ed PC this week to see.

A mate of mine was a naughty person and has been using the devilsown corp version but he's thinking of paying the £105 for the Pro OEM version but he doesn't want to reinstall.

Can he delete the CD Key and re-enter a valid key then activate it ?

Thanks :)

I have the Pioneer DVD-106, slot jobby, and it works fine on my XP machine - any Region films play fine under WinDVD.

Sounds like a knackered drive m8 :(

With regard to changing the XP product key, this may be worth a try:

Run a system resore to create a new checkpoint in case you need it.
1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents, on the right double click on "oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.
2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone.
3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (your Corporate one only).
3a. If it brings you back to the prior screen after entering the new key click remind me later and then reboot.
4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2 for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "windows is already activated".
4.1 Now install SP1
5. If you have done this wrong or without a valid key you will not be able to boot. hit F8 and select last known good configuration

Got his from http://www.windowsxp.nu/

The site is all about installing the SP1 for XP, but I wouldn't install this as it is a 'pre-release', but it may work with changing the prouct key. Worth a try ?

Yes it was right, just didn't include every single program since none of them have really been released to the general public yet so its a moot point tbh.

I also don't see it being the cause of Ono problems.

ya missed the point :p but tis sunday and I'm in a GOOD MOOD so I'll let u off...

the point was that this is a new patch which solves tons of issues with dvd playback and drive support in XP however being the first patch to demo the WPA protection he'd need a legit version to use it.

He Installed SP1 Beta and it works 'lurvly'

It now allows you to 'uninstall' :

  • Media Player
  • Outlook Express
  • Messenger
  • Internet Explorer

And when the third party peeps code their programs correctly they will appear on the list as well

But thats the only visual thing thats been noticed

The cracks on the trial 180 versions, etc were shit and the one I once checked replaced the winlogon file and patched a load of others...luckily I managed to get the devils version and I'm not worried about these changes to WPA for two reasons:

1. I have two legit copies of XP home.
2. I have the Key generator already ;)
