I remember Jotuns
they were my tribe.
In early times
they raised me.
Nine homes,
nine rooms,
the holy tree
before it grew from soil.
In early times
before Yme started building
There was no sand nor sea
no cooling vawes..
no earth,
no sky
There was Ginnungagap,
but no grass.
Not before the sons of Bur
told the vawes to lift,
and they created
The Midplace.
From the south
Sun would shine
on stones in the halls
and herbs would grow.
The Sun came in the South,
the sister of the moon
held her right hand
on heavens horses.
The Sun didn't know
what space she owned,
The Moon didn't know
what power he posessed,
the Stars didn't know
what places they owned.
All the gods
sat in council chairs.
The holy ones
negotiated and
gave names and tasks
to night and dawn
morning too
and midday
afternoon and evening
all year through.
They played a game in the yard,
they had great fun (the gods)
- but they obviously
weren't used to the gold -
until three
"tussemoyer" came
from Jotunheim
and confused all things...
Till one day
came three
of the highest Aesir
to the house.
On the shore they found
- powerless and
without a destony,
Ask and Embla.
They had neither spirit
nor wits
nor color, nor law (destony)
or warmth of life.
Odin gave soul
Hone gave wits
the beautiful Loki
gave warmth of life.
I know the ash (tree).
It's named Yggdrasil.
It's a tall tree, watered
by hvite waves.
From it comes dew
that falls in the valleys.
It always stands green
over the well of Urd.
From there comes the women,
the wise ones,
three from the hall
that stands under the tree.
Urd is one
Verdande another.
They wrote the runes.
Skuld is the third.
They made the laws (destony),
they appointed life.
For mankind
they tell destony.
In the east sat the old one
in the forest of iron
and there she gave birth
to the children of Fenre.
One of them is it
who will become
the thief looking like a troll,
the one who will steal the sun.
Feeds himself
on human corpses,
blood streaming around the
homes of the gods.
Sun is black
the summers after,
weather's cold.
Have you heard enough, or what?
A riot in the home of gods
is the first memory
from when they slayed
Gullveig with spears,
and in Har's hall
they burned her.
They burned her three times,
she who was three times born.
But still, like always...
- She's still alive.
They called her Heid
the one who came to the houses
the wise and cunning Volve.
She woke the curses,
always spread the black magic
and always with great skill.
She always gathered and helped
the angry women.
The gods all
sat in council chairs.
The holy ones
negotiated:
Should the Aesir
pay a fine
or give a sacrifice
to all gods?
Odin threw a spear
into the midst of the hall
It was a war
the first in the home of gods.
Broken were the walls
of the castle of Aesir.
The Jotuns
patrolled the open fields.
