Ok, so the game is out in the US, and I'm sure there are lots of you out there who have acquired it via less than legitimate means so by now I expect there are more than a few barrypeeps playing...
Being an uber-lucky sod (and having a legit version as I do ) I've tried to have a play but have hit more than a few proverbial brick walls with what can only be descrived as a STACK of bugs... Scooting over to the official forums (nwn.bioware.com) and having a good read of their technical support threads all I can say is that I'm amazed with the number of problems people are experiencing in general... having read solidly proportion of it over nearly two hours I still think I've only touched on 40% of the problems people are experiencing.
1. Patching issues
Hopefully this will be fix0red before it gets it's retail release this side of the pond later this week... in short patching is an utter nightmare for a lot of users. If you didn't know already there is already a new patch for download to address some of the more serious bugs and guess what - yes there are a few bugs in the patching process itself.
Some users are finding the patching itself fails on a particular file and have had to reinstall several times - the claim from bioware is that these files have been corrupted on their pc's - do I need to point out that this is the digital era? when files are copied across we don't end up with a rough approximation, the copy is exact, and the number of users reporting this specific problem is in the hundreds
Others are getting the rather ominous error of:
Can not find patch file: /neverwinternights/nwn_pc_english_from1116711_to1186718.md5
The patch has been aborted
which has no known cure - a reinstall doesn't fix it, and even biowares manual patching application fails in this circumstance... oh goodie...
2. Graphics
Apart from Voodoo5 5500 users not being able to play the game at all ATI users are having to roll back to pre-catalyst drivers to get any stability from their systems, ati/amd/w2k combo users don't stand a chance according to a lot of users (some have made the leap to upgrade/dual booting with XP just so they can play). Some nVidia users under winME specifically have experienced a total loss of textures or just some items being 'randomly coloured black'... which is nice
3. savegames
this has to be one of the most frustrating, and it believed to be a part of the file corruption issue... but basically a lot of people are finding their savegames corrupted randomly which means either having to take regular backups of all the files or if you weren't so well planned having to start all over again.
4. CD Keys
For those who can actually get the game running and patched successfully there is one massive hurdle still remaining.
It seems that warez monkeys have already got access to a key generator which is generating legitimate keys, bioware have implemented a system which logs which users are using which keys and multiple users on any keys means a blacklist...
what this has meant in a lot of cases is people getting games home, installing, playing for a few hours, *trying* to jump online and finding that 8+ others are using a key which has now been blocked.
This is just a teeny part of the storm brewing on the official forums, and it's a crying shame as NwN has the capability to deliver a LOT...
It has to be said however that I've never seen so many complaints/problems/issues on a game support forum which has been running for such a short period.
I thought it was just a bunch of whiny yanks (no offense meant ) but having experienced a few of the above issues myself it has to be said that things look very bleak indeed
