Coming back here has brought so many good and funny memories for me, its been great :)

I started browsing and stalking myself over the years and found some old posts from myself on the Barrysworld archive forums and Wireplay forums from the year 2000 13 years ago !! :)

That's as far back on me I have found so far not sure how deep down the rabbit hole I want to go...

Just wondering how far you lot go back and from where ?

This was Counter-stike days and winning the Barrysworld Tournament with ECSF .... Never did get that hat.... bloody 'Game' not the game but Game!

Blame Bigfoot and Ted for any hat allocation issues.

I joined BW in either 2001 or 2002, not a great deal of time before the move to FH. 12, years nearly half my life!

Bigfoot had a prize budget...for hats...even after GAME took over. There was a pallet full of BarrysWorld cups, hats, t-shirts (I found mine the other day), beer mats etc. that we wouldn't have got through in a century.

I think I joined in 03-04. I know that I definitely joined after the move to FH. The weird thing is I didn't really start using the forum until about 2 years after I had quit DAOC, which was the reason I came here in the first place.

I get rather embarrassed at the some of the things I posted in my Dark Age of Camelot days, but then wistful about some of the nice people I met and lost contact with.

Probably around 1998, at least sometime near 98. I used the 0845 dialup a lot as well as other stuff, my 0845 usage got so bad I ran up a quarterly phone bill of £1000 on my dads business line....oops.

I found a Hayes 14.4 modem the other day at work sealed in a box. I might break it out and play with it just for kicks

I loved my Janet connection in Uni. 300kps in 1992 to my room.

Yes. The first thing I *ever* saw on the "internet" was porn. Someone came into my room and asked me to type in a certain sequence of numbers.

Up came this story about the Thundercats. Wiley Kit and Wiley Kat were gettin' it on, Cheetara was getting it in both ends from Panthro and Tigra and Lion-o was getting bummed by Snarf. :D

But yeah. BW. From 1998. God love Starseige: Tribes.

I still remember your 128 player server*.

Fucking 64 player servers are trumpeted nowadays and I think it's a bit pathetic. Gaming hasn't moved forward from Tribes IMO. That was the zenith of the FPS genre for me. :)

* when it was up - you were pushing it quite hard there ;)

Think it struck a chord there, back then, all those years ago we were playing 64 users per server on shit bandwidth and even today the dedicated server has been left behind, show me a dedicated FPS server that can handle more than 64 concurrent users....? The problem with online play today is that there is the MMO area and the rest, MMO has moved forward, the rest has not. (The rest being FPS and most other genre).

I remember when I eventually got BT highway and thought how much of an improvement it was, even lived it up on some weekends and used both lines.

Completely agree.

In fact, I'd say there's been a revival of 80's style gaming - stylistically and graphically. The only arena (apart from MMO's) that is pushing the boundaries is the indy scene. Small projects with low development costs which necessarily have to focus on gameplay.

I can't remember a game I've enjoyed as much as FTL for quite a while, for example. And there's a host of stuff that goes with that - the duality of PC gaming at the moment is seemingly a cross between the RIAA-of-gaming (big corporate EA bollocks) and the cool indy Andrew-Braybrook style stuff of the 80's (Geoff Minter and his actual abusing of sheep and llama's).

I know which side of the fence I currently sit on. And it ain't the big-dollar shite that appeals to teenagers.

A good example of gaming not moving forward is this: Elite is being remade. I first played it on the BBC Micro in, like, '84. I've yet to find a space game that captures my imagination in the same way. Star Citizen's going some way to make that sort of shite happen - but that's thirty years after the first idea came into our heads and we've been waiting all this time.

The lesson gaming's never really learned is that we don't really need spanky spanky graphics. We need something to spank our imagination...

I too was an elite junkie on the BBQ then spectrum. Another great game that i loved was " the Oracle" shite graphics now of course but captured my imagination. Graphics are good for initial take in. For example barbarian on the spectrum was another shocking graphics game but ok story, blood and a huge picture of Maria Whitaker clevage on te packet ;)
