Norton Install Problems

My Dad just got a new machine for his business and he made the mistake of asking me to set it up for him. Anyway to the point...
The machine came with Windows XP home edition on it. I've installed Office 2003 SBE, AOL (oh well its his email) 7, Acrobat, WinZip, Sage and Sweet & Maxwell (Planning Law thingy). When I install Norton Internet Security CD it installs fine but after the first Live Update, windows goes wierd on the restart. The first program loaded up after booting crashes (I've tried a few different ones). I've reinstalled Norton a couple of times with different options but the same thing happens. Machine works fine again when I uninstall it and I can't find anything of real help by googling. :(
Not sure what to do to be honest, any and all help will be appreciated.

Ben.

You've just answerd your own question really. Leave Norton off and use XP's own firewall or one of the freebies. Zone alarm is good and its free.

Outpost is also very good if you want more power. If he's not a computer user htough, as you suggest, then Zone Alarm is the way to go.

XPs own firewall thing seemed to have a problem with AOL (as do most ppl) and wouldn 't let me access the options so I'm giving ZoneAlarm a go. Thanks for the replies and I'll be back if it still doesn't like me :).

In my oppinion, Windows' built-in firewall kinda sucks :) If you are going to connect to irc you have to open internal and external port for ident ( 113 ). I use BlackIce firewall which is pretty easy and comfortable but it has not got advanced features. I heard Zonealarm is also good and Sygate Personal Firewall

fwiw...I had severe problems with norton antivirus and XP home...basically it caused my pootah to hang on loading....I had to resort to restoring a system backup in order to rip norton out.

I had a similar problem with Trend PCcillin....100% cpu usage even when idle....

In the end I plumped for McAffee...that works fine :D
