soundcard :- SB Live 1024

I'm using the standard win2k drivers (5.0.2184.1) not installed the cd as the play center s/w doesn't seem to do anything. I'm sure I've plugged them into the right plug (the black one according to the manual), the rear speakers work fine when I plug them into the front output. I've also selected surround speakers from the sound properties.

The manual says check:-

If you are are playing sound from one of these sources:-

cd-audio
Line in
TAD
Aux
Microphone

Any idea whats wrong? thanks

Make sure that you have set up the correct number of speakers. The default for is desktop stereo speakers. You can change this in control panel sounds and audio

What he said...

Set it to quadraphonic speakers not surround sound. Surround Sound is 5 channel. If you set it to this, it seems that all the rear speakers stop working rather than just loosing the center speaker as you would expect

quadraphonic speakers don't work either.

I've tried installing the cdrom s/w again
Note: If you have a 4-speaker configuration (2 in the front, 2 in
the rear), and there is no sound coming from the rear speakers,
open Sound Blaster Live!'s Speaker applet to change the speaker
output setting.

a. Bring your pointer to the top of the screen to display Creative
Launcher, and then click the Speaker option under the AudioHQ tab.
The Speaker dialog box appears.

b. Make sure that the value in the Speaker Output box corresponds
to the number of speakers you are using. For example, if you are
using two pairs of speakers, select the "4 Speakers" option; if
you leave the Output value as "2 Speakers", there will be no sound
from your rear speakers.

c. Using Creative PlayCenter or Windows Media Player, open a Wave
file in your computer and play it. To check that each speaker is
working, in the Speaker dialog box, drag the Wave source icon
from the Panning Source box to each speaker in turn. You should
hear the selected sound being played at the speaker being tested.
If you do not, see Appendix D, "Problems with Sound", in the
Getting Started manual.

There is no speaker option under audio HQ, nothing at all.

I don't think the s/w recognises my sb live card, creative diagnostics->midi actually says so (you do not have a creative live installed on your computer). play center, recorder and surround mixer doesn't work. In creative diagnostics it says something about 'testing of speaker is not available in windows NT, which makes me think the software is designed for win 98. I'll d/l new s/w and give it a go.

Get the latest drivers off the net. Its also worth noting the SB Live is fucking awful with rear speakers, I know people who have never heard a peep out of their rear speakers even when pressing Test...

In the SBLive program folder there is a shortcut (has "Speakers" in the title somewhere) that opens up the setup to reconfigure the number of speakers to use. I dumped my SBLive though so I can't remember exactly what it's called.

After the difficult process of installing the s/w, as the self extracting exe wouldn't update the drivers ( I tried update driver, and win2k didn't even recognise the new driver being better and kept the existing one). Once I selected the alternative creative driver it worked.

Now all the software works (diagnostics says everything is Ok) , I'm using quadraphonic speakers, when I test the 4 speakers. Its says front left & rear left (& not front right and rear right). When I try to play music. My 2.1 computer speakers in the front line out work fine, but only one of my hi-fi speakers in the rear line out work. If I switch the channels. They all work (2.1 for the rear, hi-fi for the front) When I test them, they all work apart from rear right.

I'd still like it to work the other way.
