Basically, looking for a type of fighting style that is based mainly on self defence. That is, not all this judo chops etc. but rather a fighting style that is mainly utilised with self defence.

Both Brazilian and Gracie 'Jistu is good :)

Though to be honest, you don't need training that much in anything to be able to defend yourself, a basic understanding of how the body works, weight transfer and limitations of your own body and you can think up all what you need yourself

take a club/baseball bat, hammer a bunch of big nails through it so they stick out on the other side and you're fine.
No one's gonna bother to get into a fight with you!

If you watch MMA, you'll see how useless most martial arts are in real fights.

Good conditioning, *Jiu Jitsu and some generic striking will serve you better than circus acts like Tae Kwon Do or Krav Magna(do you ever see them used in the Pride FC?).

I will add, Jiu Jitsu is nice but combined with Muai Thai it is just lethal.

Aye, Wing Tzun is, in my opinion, the most effectice thing out there. Jeet Kun Do seems to be too hard to master, as it is a blend of a lot of different styles that I think Bruce Lee made up, might be wrong about that, but which seems to be a clutter unless you know a great deal about fighting (or have tried a lot of stuff :p)

Just learn to box, self defence and very good way to fight. If your going to have a fight with someone or feel like your being threatend go to police if not then if you are going to have a fight dont stand back fucking lay into him non stop dont get off him just keep laying into him, when your backing off some1 its a mistake charge at em and keep on em.

or just don't fight at all..

fighting doesn't solve things tbh, mostly makes it worse.

thats not really for self defence tho. u CAN use it as such but Jiu Jitsu (sp?) is probably the better option if all u want to do is control the fight without acually hurting your opponent. there is no punches or kicks in jiu jitsu at all. just moves that let you disable and disarm your oponent in a humane way. might be something thats better but i doubt it.

Yeah, cause Krav Maga isnt used by special forces and police forces all over the world, its just some crazy clown tricks. :)

Can't speak for Brazillian Ju-jitsu, but from training in the vanilla variety for the past 7 years (nothing fancy just you usual local club part of the wjjf organisation), I can say you'll cover a bit of everything, you do alot of throws and locks (some of them effective alot of them impractical), but you also do an equal amount of striking work from plain kicks and punchs to eye gouges and elbows. Locks and throws are nie on impossible to be used effectively in a fight with out a strike to distract or weaken the oppenent.
I can't speak authoritively but aswell as ju-jitsu I have trained in goju ryu karate (3 years as a kid 6 months as an adult) but it just wasn't my cup of tea didn't have the same variety and I didn't like the clubs policy on no/very little contact. For a martial art to be used as a self defence it matters a much on the individual as the discipline chosen, I'm a half decent martial artist however I've come out worse in acouple of fights due to not being agressive enough and so not getting the first strike in. Secondly try a few different clubs in same martial art, most instructors have different ways of teaching and policies on contact, I've been lucky mine hasn't strictly followed the organisations guidelines and health and saftey policies so we can get knocked about a bit, and learn some potentially nasty stuff.

Finally to offer my 2 pence worth on you actual question do ju-jitsu for general all round scrapping, and ground work and a muy thai for the striking and building up fitness and getting used to taking knocks, although I haven't trained in Muy Thai myself I intend to once my arm has healed and I can return to training.

P.S Judo or Krav magna could be substituted forthe ju-jitsu, but if you can put the time into do 2 sessions a week in a couple of martial arts go for muy thai, being able to throw in knees and elbow will compliment the others, and the sparring will get you used to moving.

well, the best defence in my opinion, is just to be cold and strike first. when these fuckers come to you, make sure u get him hard on the cheek, and rest of them will see what a crazy fuck you are. they'll get scared, and think twice. seriously, might sound "omgimsoleet" but thats the only thing that works for me, as im not a wery good runner. :(
ofc, practicing boxing is probably why i can do those things, i rarely miss, and the technique is there for me allready.

by my own experiences, the most crazy dude walks away.

In regards to Urglufs comments about not gfetting in fights. im afraid this is inevitable.

There is psychological tests which pretty much prove however much of a pasifist you are, if pressured enough you will retaliate.

There is a specific word to do with insanity, its used for when someone very calm see's his wife stabbed/shot etc, he gets momentary insanity or whatever the word is and acts in a violent manner.

I do think if you can stay out of trouble and calm a situation then thats great, but every so often the person who is in your face is looking for trouble.

LOL so true :twak:

Any one remembers that video of the brit comedian in a parody of a martial class master lesson?? When he starts babling about mental balance, relax, and all that zhen shit, then asks for a volunteer for a pratice demo. Lol at the guy when he starts charging the poor fellas n beating them mindless like a drunken hooligan after a Spurs - Liverpool match. I remember falling from my chair at the stare of that video. :eek7:

On a serious note. After practicing t for 4 years, i really think Aikido is the defensive martial art for excellence. Its based on the principle of energy and motion, using the charging force of your opponent in your own favour and turning it againts him. One of the cookie-cutter moves include torsions, limbs breaks, body locks and body throws etc... (my left wrist and right shoulder have some experience with that :( )

PS. trying to find that video on youtube. It was hilarious. I remember seeing it posted in FH :p
