Stolen from another forum.

A family went swimming in the sea off the New Zealand coast and suddenly realised that they "were not alone".

They found themselves surrounded by a school of dolphins and - one great white shark!

Lifesaver stated that the Shark had been attracted to the family and that the dolphins swarmed the area, protecting the family, putting the shark off and disorientating it.

Dolphin expert said that the Dolphins were not calving or carrying young so their actions were purely in protection of the people.

cool story, imho :D

Dolphins are evil. The are smart, they wouldn't do this without an ulterior motive.

It seems not unusual this type of thing occuring, i remember reading a story years ago where i think 2 or 3 dolphins killed a great white, and it was caught on camera.

Pretty cool, altho i respect the great white immensley, you'd never see me doing such a thing.

Wonder if TDC is gonna go surfing ;)

I remember seeing that recent BBC series on life in the sea (the one with the deep sea footage of weird fishies), they showed 2 killer Whales chasing down a dolphin, it took hours, but eventually the dolphin was so knackered that the Whales ripped it to pieces.

Yum!

I think it is more likely the family stumbled upon a shark who was after some dolphion stake, and they were the ones that spooked the shark. After all, sharks have a stupid reputation, and most have never seen a human before - so naturally tend to avoid.

The dolphins circled the swimmers (lifeguards in training, not a family) for 40 minutes till the shark swam off. It wasn't some accident. The dolphins even bumped one of the people back into the circle when he tried to go for help. Dolphins are immensly intelligent creatures. It's hard to know why they did this but it certainly was a deliberate act on the part of the dolphins to protect the swimmers from the shark.

Squids are pretty intelligent, on the order of a dog so I believe. Yet you don't see squids protecting humans.

Bastards.

The more of the humans they keep alive, the quicker we will destroy ourselves and the sooner they can teleport themselves back to uranus and their brethren.

But Uranus is a very cold gas giant......a bit cold for Dolphins....

Europa would probably be more suitable :)

You think the dolphins would be stupid enough to let us humans hang around them ALL of the time? Of course they don't *need* to be in water all of the time.

The daddy of the family obviously worked for a tuna fishing firm. The dolphins were just using the shark to lure him into a false sense of security before they strike.

I don't trust dolphins, any animal that smiles that much is planning something...
