Looks interesting, and no doubt will definatly be worth buying a couple HB 1st editions when/if it's released.

here

A YELLOWING manuscript by J.R.R.Tolkien discovered in an Oxford library could become one of the publishing sensations of 2003.

The 2000 handwritten pages include Tolkien's translation and appraisal of Beowulf, the epic 8th century Anglo-Saxon poem of bravery, friendship and monster-slaying that is thought to have inspired The Lord of the Rings.

if you really think there overrated try reading The History's Of Middle Earth. Basicly its all the notes/manuscript's/scraps of paper that Cristopher Tolkien has found and released in a readable form.
The ammount of work that he did on what is basicly a complete history since time began up untill the Lord Of The Rings is an eye opener.

There's no need to be like that, theriven. I don't like Tolkien's writing style at all, and subsequently I haven't read any of his books (apart from enough to find out that I didn't like his style, obviously), but that doesn't make me an illiterate spack. I've read many many books that capture my mind and won't let go, Tolkien's just aren't among those.

The hobbit was quite frankly brilliant.. TLoTR were very enjoyable if a little long... The Silmarillion is just utter turd however... I will give it the fact that all of Tolkiens history of Middle Earth it true to itself... but.. but alot of it is so pointless... let alone a complete rip off of the old testement! There're so many different characters with elvish names... the only ones I can remember are Melkor/Morgoth and Sauron!

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the Silmarillion.

Just takes a bit more concentration than the Hobbit etc as you have to keep track of the lineages.

As for it being an Old Testament rip off -- well yes Tolkein was very religious -- does that necessarily make it bad ???

The start of the Silmarillion is indeed hard going, however if you liked Tolkiens other stuff I would seriously recommend sticking with it, as it does get more straightforward as it goes on.
