New system?

OK my 2nd PC has died, dunno wtf's up with it, really cba fucking about with components and stuff any more, i've tried a new vidcard, new NIC, ferkin about with all sorts of settings, it's shagged.

In the past I've always built my own systems but I've had enough of that crap, I want to get a barebones system that I can just plug in and it'll work. It doesn't need to be a monster but it does need to be capable of running the odd game (DAOC mostly). Oh and I'd quite like to be able to bung an extra HDD or 2 in it so things like Shuttles are out. I don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc etc, just a box.

So any recommendations? I'm looking to spend 300-400 quid tops really.

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Go down to your local Computer Fair, haggle, and walk away with a fairly impressive box for that kind of money. :)

I ran my shuttle with 2 HDDs for a while, you just lose the floppy drive.

You do realise that all barebones systems don't have any processor/ram in them, they are just the case/psu/mobo so in reality you can't just plug it in and go unless you get a ready to run package from a shop.

These people do some decent looking base units, at reasonable prices.
How about a XP2000 based system for £299? Or a XP2400 for £500?

You could probably find them cheaper if you look

I have to confess that I've newer used these people, but EuroPC seem to have some fairly amazing deals. Like this brand-new base-unit featuring an Athlon 2000XP+ Processor, 512MB SDRAM, 40GB IDE Hard Drive (7200rpm), DVD-Rom, V90 Modem, Integrated LAN, 3D Stereo Sound and Integrated Video for £373.66 inc. VAT and Delivery. Not a bad system for the money, even if you would perhaps want to upgrade a component or two.

Novatech may be another option, as they allow you to custom build a PC from scratch. Unfortunately, I have a feeling this would come in over budget.

Alternatively, as Wilier says, searching Google or the likes should yield quite a lot of results. Personally, I think I'd build a system from scratch. I know you said you didn't want to, but in fairness, most base units are just a case, PSU and a motherboard bundled togeter. If you're not after the design-advantages that the Shuttle offers, then it may be more cost effective to just start from scratch.

Sorry I cannot be of more assistance

Mines a better option Jonty, admit it, its £73 less.

If Granny liked he could use that to buy a DVD rom and another 256mb ddr and still have change for fish and chips

:p
