New printer and scanner, please

Afternoon peoples. :)

I'm after a new scanner and printer. Both will primarily be used to scan and print black-and-white photographs and I'm after the best quality within a reasonable budget (but I don't know what my budget is yet). I'm thinking a high-quality ink-jet printer rather than an expensive laser printer.

Do you lot have any recommendations, or models to avoid?

Also, recommended photo-quality paper would be gratefully received.

Many thanks, as ever.

I think my Dad worked out that taking a CD of prints down to Jessops was cheaper than buying the photographic paper. Other than that, I can't really help.

Summo,

Epson 740 is a good printer for photos. Its a bit out of date now (had mine for 9 years and its still going strong)

As for photographic paper - Jessops was the cheapest we found.

Scanners - cant remember the one I have (sorry) but i think they are all much of a muchness.

The printer I use for photos is an Epson 810, and does a pretty good job (although to print out two 5"x7" photos on a single A4 takes about 20 minutes on maximum detail settings).

As for photo paper, it depends on what quality paper you want. There's a wide variety of different types of paper (some have more gloss than others, therefore suitable for higher resolutions etc), but are all marketed as "photo paper".

If you can get to a computer fair, you'll usually find a stall selling multiple grades of photo paper with sample printouts on each grade, so you can see for yourself.

SomeGuy,

I recently purchased a Canon S330 Photo. Incredibly cheap, but really very good. Compares with printers twice its cost.

Photo paper is Epson from *ahem* work.

Scanner, erm, *shrug*
