New player - convince me!

Hi. I am new to DaoC, and these forums.
I haven't bought the DaoC and SI yet, but I will. (I am going on a 10 day school trip in 1 weeks time and I won't waste away 33% of my first month)

1:Convince on which realm I should be playing, and what class you recommend!
I like casting generally, and the spellcraft skill. Most preferably would be something that can tank and use magic. To say it short: a cool class, with cool moves/magic and great fun levelling! :D

2: Sadly I have a rather crap computer:
P3 500MHZ
640 MB SD-RAM
Geforce 2 PRO 64 MB DDR
20 GB HD

I think that's enough for running SI, smooth or semi-choppy on 1024x768. with all details on lowest. Since I have twice the RAM specified and a semi-good GFX card.

Anyways, I need comments :D

The spec you have will run SI although most of the effects will be turned down or off - effectively you'll just have a new continent and characters, still not that bad.

As for what realm/character to play that really has to be your choice, there is a wealth of hybrid fighters out there, some more magical than others, again it depends how you want to play.

Wardens in hib could be considered tanks as they can wear scale armour and spec in weapons, they can also heal other realm members. Where as reavers in alb seam to have more offensive magic

Take alook at the various DAOC sites around.

Yup it will work...

In scenarios where you'll find LOTS of players (200+) you will have to take forced coffee breaks though..

Most classes in Hibernia deal with Magic in some form or another, either in self buff spells or small direct damage spells.

If your looking for 50/50 split then Warden or Valewalker in Hibernia.

As for the other realms hybrid class.

Albion
Friar, Paladin, not sure in thier SI classes

Midgard
Thane?, Skald, again not sure on thier SI classes

Following site is pretty good for class descriptions
http://copland.udel.edu/~trevor/camelot/

I suppose Midgard is the coolest realm being as they are further North ;)

Reaver (alb) and Savage (mid) are both hybrid tanks with magical abilities.

As for spellcrafting, if you want that you have to play a pure caster, which means tanking is definitely out of the question.

For hibernia I would also say a Champion might fit you.

id say shaman in midgard, if specced in cave and augmentation a shaman can solo quite easy.

in hib id go for a warden or valewalker and in alb a reaver...

Why are you asking? Midgard me old mucker, its the best... no the ONLY choise.

Yeah if you like caster type classes then i'd heavily recommend a cave/aug shammy, i've got a lvl 43 one and i kick ass (low mend can be a bit of a bugger though)

You can bolts that while not comparable to casters are still powerful in their own right (Bolts being the high damage spells with the longest range, but come with a 20sec timer)

The DD is nice as well, especially when they seperated its timer from the bolt on (pure Casters don't have a timer on their DD's and they probably do more though)

DOT (Damage over time) doing about 100ish damage on most mobs with maybe 10 dmg points plus or minus depending on the mobs con, Also the AE finally does 6 ticks like every other realm :)

Chain armour, the best on offer to any caster/hybrid caster in the game (Some albi tanks get plate, but who wants to look like a baked bean tin?) as well as healer HP tables (In between the HP of a pure tank and a hybrid tank/rouge table)

Lets not forget that shamans are an extremly group friendly class, Midgards an extremly friendly realm, that and we have a number of alliances that'l make sure the albis/hibs will never see their relics every again! (then again, i'l bet the albis said that when they had the str relics  )

Anyway, i'm bored with selling midgard it doesn't really need much. We kick ass, join us and have a laugh. did i mention we have cake?

I'd go for hibernia as we just have loads and loads of friendly players, I'm sure you'll feel welcome :)

I think you would be happy with a champion or a valewalker:

- Champions are tanks that use magic to debuff the opponent, champs also have an insta-DD and an insta-snare spell. Make sure you put 10 in str, con and dex when you start.

- Valewalkers use scythes as weapon, they're wearing the weakest armor but they get spells to improve it (lots). They also get a castable DD spell. The more levels the gain the more effective tanks they are, and at any level they solo very easy. Never had one, but put 10 points in dex and con for sure when you start. The other 10 points in str I think, but not sure.

Champions can specialise in a certain number of things:
- Valor: The specline in which you get all the magical things like a self-buff (str+con increase), debuffs to use on the opponent, insta-DD and insta-snare.
- Large Weaponry: The most popular and (in my opinion) best weapontype for a champion. You can use two-handed swords and weapons if you put points in this specline.
-Shield: You have a base chance to block, 10% (could also be 5%). For every point in shield you get an additional 0.5% chance to block.
-Blades/Piercing/Blunt - Three weapontypes, slash, thrust and crush damage. You can use one-handed weapons if you specialise in one of those three speclines. Use this in combination with shield.
-Parry - Additional defence, probably not worth putting too many points in this at low level as you need to focus on valor and weapon/shield.

At level 10 there are three viable templates:
- 10 valor
- 8 Large Weaponry

And

-10 valor
-6 blades/piercing
-6 shield

And

-10 valor
-8 blunt
-3 shield

If you go for LW, make sure you keep valor maxed and LW as high as you can get it. Maybe put some points in parry for defence later on.
If you go for shield+1handed weapon keep valor maxed, get the first 'taunt' style (blades and thrust get the first taunt move at 6 specpoints, crush gets the first taunt move at 8 specpoints) and from then on distribute the points between shield and your weapon.

There are three races that can become a champion: Lurikeens, Celts and Elves. The celt has the optimal statistics but to be honest later on it doesn't really matter much. Just pick a race you like :)

Valewalkers have it much easier. They can only spec in three things:
- Scythe: their only weapon.
- Parry: their only defence (though their evade rate is pretty good).
- Arborial Path: their magic, spells to compensate the weakness of cloth armor, a snare spell, a damage-over-time spell and a self-speed-increase (faster weapon swings) spell. Also some other things but I have never played a valewalker so I can't tell the exact details :)

At level 10 go for:
-7 scythe (you need the 'taunt' move at level 6)
-9 arborial

-----

That said there are three ways of gaining experience in DAoC:

1 Hunting monsters solo
2 Hunting monsters in a group
3 Doing killtasks

1: Find a monster that "cons" good to you (read the in-game tips when you press 'c' the first time in the game). Attack it, use magic and weaponstyles to kill it. Sit down with 'c' to regain health and endurance faster after a fight. When you're fully rested find another monsters.

2: Groups, I won't bother you with perfect group lay-outs and all that, just know your role as a tank in a group: make sure the monster hits YOU instead of another, more fragile class in the group. If you use the 'taunt' weapon styles you really piss the monster off so it goes after you. After that pray the healers keep you alive and casters kill the monster fast enough :)

3 Doing killtasks. Don't bother with this, really. You need to know the exact locations of monster-spawns to do this effectively. You'll find out over time.

Good luck :)

Albion, Friar........

Big stick, float like a butterfly sting like a bee, heal your friends too.

Nothing more satisfying than seeing a friar dogde pretty much all that mid/hib tanks can throw and put them down with a couple of twats with that big stick

Im rolling my friar wish id done it ages ago.

The hardest part is to choose a class, that I'll be having fun with, until I reach (eventually) lvl 50. Until now I stand between a Champion in Hibernia and Reaver in Albion. Vodkafairy gave a pretty good 'guide' to being a Champion...and it really tempted me, looks like the nature in Hibernia is pretty too :D
I read somewhere that the Reaver has debuffs like the Champion, and lifetaps/DD spells like the Thane. Also being able to use flails and whips. But it's a really hard choice.

btw. I'm going to play on the Excalibur server.

Reaver Soulrending

1 Drain Life Shout
2 Damage over Time Shout
3 Direct Damage Shout [PB] [AE] [C]
4 Auto-Cast In Melee [Self]
5 Lower Dmg Potential Shout [PB] [AE] [C]
6 Aid Melee Dmg Shout [Self]
7 Lower Absorption Shout [PB] [AE] [C]

These are all the spells that reavers get according to the character builder.

1) Drain life damages the opponent and transfers some of the health points to you. It's a shout, meaning it has no cast time but a timer to compensate it (15-20 secs timer I think).

2) Damage over Time hits the opponent for a certain ammount of damage every tick for a specified period. The stats are: 23 damage every tick, for 24 seconds with 4 second between the tics at level 49 in Reaver Soulrending. Has a 1min recast timer probably.

3) Direct Damage Shout hurts opponents within 350m range of you. Doesn't hit hard though :)

4) Errr, don't know exactely what it is. It's a buff you can cast and every time you get hit you have a small chance it automatically casts something nasty on the one that hit you. I don't know if that's true and I certainly don't know what the effects are :)

5) Lower damage potential shout - reduces potential damage of every enemy within a 350m radius of you. Also is a shout, meaning it has some kind of recast timer. Probably ranging from 5 to 10 (maybe even 30) minutes.

6) Aid melee damage shout - This improves your damage, recast timer will be around 5-10 (or again, maybe 30) minutes.

7) Lower absorbtion shout - For 10 seconds, enemies take 50% more damage. Also has a 350m radius around you. Recast will be high, probably 30 mins, as this spell is extremely powerfull if used right.

That's it :p

Oh and.... sorry for more text:

Spellcrafting is a trade skill. You have to visit the Spellcrafters Master to become a spellcrafter. Then, you have to pick a certain stone to practise on. Find enough ingredients to make a couple of those and once in a while you will skill up (gain one point in spellcrafting).

With those stones you can improve crafted armor. Example:

You can craft a stone which gives +4 strength. Once you have crafted that stone you can imbue it on a weapon or armor piece so that the weapon or armor gives +4 strength.

The higher skill you have in spellcrafting, the higher level stones you can make. Up to +24[stat] stones I believe. Items also have limited imbue points, the higher level item and the better quality item the more imbue points.

Hope I made it clear for you :p

ps. Spellcrafting is a trade skill, it does not improve your combat skills.

taken from http://camelotherald.com/documentation/spellcraft/

Spellcrafting is available to “pure casters” as well as healers (basically, any class that cannot specialize in a weapon). Specifically:

Albion: Cabalists, Clerics, Sorcerers, Theurgists, Wizards
Hibernia: Druids, Eldritches, Enchanters, Mentalists
Midgard: Healers, Runemasters, Shamans, Spiritmasters

Alchemy may be taken up by “hybrids”, or fighting classes that have some form of magical or roguish bent. To wit:

Albion: Friars, Infiltrators, Minstrels, Paladins, Scouts
Hibernia: Bards, Champions, Nightshades, Rangers, Wardens
Midgard: Hunters, Shadowblades, Skalds, Thanes

Some corrections (mainly to the timers):

1) Drain life damages the opponent and transfers some of the health points to you. It's a shout, meaning it has no cast time but a timer to compensate it (15-20 secs timer I think).

30 second timer.

2) Damage over Time hits the opponent for a certain ammount of damage every tick for a specified period. The stats are: 23 damage every tick, for 24 seconds with 4 second between the tics at level 49 in Reaver Soulrending. Has a 1min recast timer probably.

30s timer again.

3) Direct Damage Shout hurts opponents within 350m range of you. Doesn't hit hard though

Chant, pulses every 1 second. Recast timer is 8s.

4) Errr, don't know exactely what it is. It's a buff you can cast and every time you get hit you have a small chance it automatically casts something nasty on the one that hit you. I don't know if that's true and I certainly don't know what the effects are

It's a lifetap proc buff, everytime you attack you have a chance to proc a lifetap. Max damage is 41 at 45 spec.

5) Lower damage potential shout - reduces potential damage of every enemy within a 350m radius of you. Also is a shout, meaning it has some kind of recast timer. Probably ranging from 5 to 10 (maybe even 30) minutes.

Chant, pulses every 10 secs for 10s duration. Recast timer is 8s.

6) Aid melee damage shout - This improves your damage, recast timer will be around 5-10 (or again, maybe 30) minutes.

It's a 30s buff recastable every 150 seconds (2.5 minutes). Gives a rather nice 15 dps add at high level.

7) Lower absorbtion shout - For 10 seconds, enemies take 50% more damage. Also has a 350m radius around you. Recast will be high, probably 30 mins, as this spell is extremely powerfull if used right.

Chant, pulses every 10 secs for 10s duration. Recast timer is 8s.

Don't kid yourself, all the 12 years olds flock to albion, when SWG comes out the Albion playerbase is going to drop to Kemor and that guy that spends all day hanging off his knob :p

Midgard is definatly the realm to go for, its not too late to save your soul. Though i suppose if you really wanted you could go to Hibby with their stupid group purge...

Nah, midgard. Here's a testament from some genuine midgardians in smiley form..

err... http://camelot-europe.goa.com/news/DAoCbook_sub.php3?id_article=834
when you look down the table on Spell craft on albion, you see Reavers can do spellcraft.
Why do you write things that are wrong all the time? you are just confusing a new player :(
Is Albion a bad realm to go? I don't know what kind of people that are there. but I've heard there's many norwegians in midgard, like myself. But the Reaver class is really tempting :)

You can play both realms hon.

Play in Midgard on Excalibur with the Norwegian guilds (yes there are a lot of them, Danish, Finnish, Dutch too etc).

Then you can play your reaver on Albion on the Prydwen server. That way you have the best of both worlds.
If you can speak French or German you also have the option of playing on all the other ones too.
