I've not really been keeping up with the latest hardware for a few years now and I've got no idea about anything! I've done some research and come up with the following system (about £1000). Can anyone spot any stupid mistakes, make any recommendations for improvements or anything else? Any help will be greatfully recieved. I basically want to improve my FPS in Supreme Commander and maybe lower my DAOC lag (although I'm not hopeful!!).

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
MSI P6N SLI Platinum
2GB OCZ SLi Ready Dual Channel Kit (PC2-8500)
OCZ 600 Watt Game X Stream PSU
74GB Western Digital Raptor
500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9
LiteOn LH-20A1H-487C (DVD-Writer) (x2)
320MB Inno3D 8800GTS

I'm not sure about the GFX card, but apparently the 8800 range is just so much better than anything else right now. Also, I can buy a second one later for 8800 SLI action if I really need to!

Okay atm the 8800 GTX are the very best. Avoid the new 8800 GTX Ultra like the plague, not worth the money.

Ok. Now if you wish to be little bit more careful with your money, then the following are going to be good.

8800 GTS 320MB / 8800 GTS 640MB or ATI RADEON HD 2900 XT (Do not get this mixed up with the HD 2900 XTX .... the extra X) .

Now the last one is not out atm (15th May HD 2900 XT), but initial reports are it will pass the 8800 GTS by about 5 - 15 %. What is important is the price point it comes in at. They are going to have to be price competitive with the 8800 GTS 320 - 640. So you could if you wait a few weeks have a card with 5-15% more umph for the same price. With a very good HDCP implementation.

The only thing to consider is what resoultion you intend to play at and the monitor/LCD you are going to go for. These cards are fine for alot of games at 1920 x 1200.

So really my advice is wait a few weeks.

What CPU cooler are you planning on getting?

Personally I dont think a raptor is worth it. Better off running a couple of SATA HD's in a RAID array. Less money for more space, faster transfer speeds, only negative is slightly slower seek speeds.
