New patch 1.4 ..good or bad?

A note on cheating and exploits -- we've all seen how cheating can destroy the gameplay experience for everyone. EA and DICE take cheating seriously and we are taking an aggressive stance in preventing exploits which allow people to cheat. The biggest source of all BF cheats and exploits are client-side modifications. With the release of patch 1.4, we are disabling all client-side mods. Unfortunately, this means that the client side mods that aren't used for cheating will also be affected. DICE and EA have spent the past few months trying to engineer a solution which allows client-side mods to work while stopping the cheats. Ultimately it proved impossible to do so in such a way that prevented future client side mods from opening up new methods of cheating and exploitation. However, this doesn't mean that all mods are unusable. By making the mods into full server-side mods (Desert Combat for example), everyone can experience the cool factor that these mods offer.

SO DICE/EA are removing clientside modding ability in the new patch such as the use of Merciless Creations mod (although Server side mods such as DC will still work fine) to remove the use of custom skins etc. Judging by their message forums, players don't seem/want to be able to play BF without custom skins

IMHO this is a good thing, EA let MOHAA go down the pan by not addressing custom skins AT ALL, and now it's community is full of paranoia and accusations. Any steps towards anti-cheating is a good thing. I know that I can live without replacement flag textures and different loading screens, not to mention day-glow player skins and no-fog hacks.

Have EA stuffed it for the modding community by doing this in the new patch or have they made a positive step in the right direction?

Hmm. I don't know BF1942 well enough to know what difference it would make but I was never a big fan of the client side mods in Tribes that allowed u to range find etc, kinda took the skill out of it imo. Not sure if that is possible in BF1942 though.

Deffo in the right direction...

I never ever saw the point in changing 99% of the things ppl do... its in all games from changing skins and textures. Like buy scripts in CS for example WTF is the point! just learn to press keys in right order ffs.

When it get to the stage where ppl change their config dramtically or change things like skins i think its time they got forced to go out =/

And imo chaging things like skins shouldnt be allowed... and before u all give me the i cant see etc etc maybe thats the point? maybe the defautl skins that EVERYONE should use shoudl be kept so that when im hiding in a corner knowing i cant see other ppl when they are there, that i to am safe from being found.

Well pld EA/Dice i say

I disagree - buy scripts in CS are perfectly sensible, and a good use of client-side modding/tweaking - to buy armour, a weapon, ammo and a grenade you are looking at around 10 key presses at the start of each round - in a clan match you can't afford to waste the first 5 - 10 seconds of every round!

Although I use buy scripts in CS and the mercilles mod in BF, I can see their point.

You say that you cant afford to waste the first few seconds in a CS clan match. Thats cos the other side are using buy scripts and unless you do you, are at a disadvantage. If no one has a buy script then you arent at a loss and its down to (some sort of) skill as to who can press the 10 buttons fast enough.

It does level the playing field, but it does take some fun out of it.

5-10 seconds? What are you doing? It takes 2, maybe 3 seconds at the most and that's being slow.

Thinking about it, I have more to say... (Sorry about the double post and all that)

All they are doing (apart from banning the cheaters which I havent seen on any server i played on) is making it more N00b friendly.

It allows the unskilled to play on servers with more skilled people. The more skilled and dedicated a person is at the game, the more they are likely to mod it somehow. Be this a cursor, skin, etc.

One way of looking at it is that I wouldnt dream of having a game of kickabout with professional football players, so why should n00bs be on a server full of people that have been playing for years?

On the otherhand, which is my point of view, the more people playing the better.

but i really like the MC blood, it adds to the game without affecting how good you are.

10 or more key presses in 2 seconds?! Just look at a second hand/counter on a clock and remind yourself how long a second is!!

'Client-side modding' can be broken down into a) replacing existing files or 'hacking' them to modify them in some way not intended by the developers; and b) files such as config files, which are easily amended in any text editor, because the developer considered it reasonable for any data therein to be customised. Remember, most offical definitions of 'cheating' revolve around how the developer intended the game to work.

Skin packs fall into category a), and it is this category of modding that official leagues and cups explicitly prohibit to make the playing field reasonably level.

it's hardly difficult to buy armour, a weapon, ammo for primary and second weapon and a grenade in 2-3 seconds, i'm always stood around for a few seconds in freezetime fully kitted out and waitin to go

and like Dr_Weasel said the only reason ppl got buy scripts is because they wanted to be the quickest out of the spawn .... must mean they ahve spastic hands and cant press keys quickly :p

But yes ppl have it because others do .. but espec for war games like BF ... if its for all the realism etc surely then the developers made the defualt skins however shit they may be the same for everyone for a reason?? IE I see the same as the other guy next to me, be that a guy half hidden thx to his uniform.. rather then me seeing a half hidden guy and the guy next to me seeing him fully as he has the latest SAS Skin =/

And on the buy script idea ... THATS bollocks almost everyone i play CS with are ready to go before the times up so either the clan su play suck ... or have the said spastic hands :D

cfg changing and creating aliasing isnt really a problem, I'd be more concerned with someone using custom skins to make players and landmines standout from backgrounds more easily.

yeah, i like knowin that the person stood next to me sees exactly the same as i do and not some glowin skin enemies. Or that a sniper tryin to find me has to find me in a camouflaged uniform and not a dayglo orange outfit.

Stupid stupid stupid. They should program detection routines and then let the people that run the servers decide whether to allow them or not. Stupid stupid goddamned stupid. These people are a joke.

I seem to remember wolfenstein (ie the Quake 3 engine) having something like that... server admins could decide whether the server is 'pure' or not, ie enforce original skins, sounds etc.

Would much rather they tweaked the FPS aspect of the game, for some reason it just feels so.... Flat!

Hmm, the same line of argument could be made as to why there are so many CS cheats out there too ;)

Yep, 100% agree, we bought the game as is, we liked the game as is, i also think they let mohaa go down the pan by not doing something like this.

As long as we can still run things like DC, coz that just rocks, it gets my vote !! :D

looks like DICE/EA are actually listening to players. Clientside mods will be permissable via a setting serverside in a "sv_pure 1" kinda way, so you want to use MC skins u can join a server that allows it, or, simply join a server with clientside mods off if you want to be certain that everyone has the same skins.

Congrats to DICE for continuing to support BF with new features and fixes in free patches rather than "sell" us fixes in overpriced expansion packs (al la MOH/Spearhead) ;)

.......a game of RTR anyone?...nah didnt think so.

1,4

hey guys as the above guy says i found the following
quote:
with the recent announcement of the 1.4 patch and our aggressive stance against cheating, some misconceptions about the patch were made. We’d like to take this time to clear a few things up, and make a special announcement.

First and foremost, server side mods will not be killed with the 1.4 patch. This means that mods like Desert Combat will continue to function as they have in the past. Secondly, we’ve listened to all of the concerned players who don’t want to lose their favorite client side mods, like the merciless mod. To help make Battlefield 1942 a great experience for everyone, DICE and EA have come up with a solution that should work for all players. In the 1.4 patch, there will be a server side option regarding content checks. When this option is turned on by the server admin, players who are using client side mods will not be able to connect to the server. When this option is turned off, players can join the server with any of the client side mods that they have. We feel that this option provides support for both players that enjoy their client side mods (merciless mod), and those that want to ensure everyone in the game is playing with the same skins/crosshairs etc.

Ahhhh to bad, It means that on some servers I cannot see any blood flying around. Coz I only have the merciless blood mod.

Plus the bright skins mod, the spikey mod, and .... etc.

Wipe them out, all of them.
