Just saw this over at driverheaven.net

'Nvidia has released a driver set to fix the 'flicker' bug in their GeForce FX video cards exclusively to DriverHeaven and a few other sites, these are not available at nvidia.com.

The new driver set is 45.33

"NVIDIA was made aware of an issue involving the GeForce FX series of graphics cards where some users have reported a light "flickering" of the image on their screen, visible on a light color background in certain 3D scenes. In examining the information available, NVIDIA has determined that the issue may involve an interaction between select combinations of the graphics card, system, monitor, other electronic components and the application which creates noise or signal interference. If you are experiencing this issue on a GeForce FX card, you can download the this driver fix. If you experience any other issues - please email us at support@nvidia.com."

Just thought I'd let you nVidia uses know :)

This is only the slightest bit related (erm, well, graphics?) but it seems Microsoft are hailing Half-Life 2 as a perfect showcase for Windows and DirectX based games; and it seems Valve have an equally high regard of Microsoft :)

Microsoft Hails 'Half-Life 2' as New Benchmark in Games for Windows
"DirectX 9.0 has been crucial in helping us create a worthy sequel to 'Half-Life,' one that gives Windows gamers everything they've been waiting for, a truly unequaled experience," said Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve. "We are thrilled that our relationship with Microsoft has produced a title that all of us can be proud of."
Talking of Half-Life, the first non-Beta of Steam (which you will soon need to play even the original Half-Life) seems to have been slightly delayed due to denial of service attack on Valve ... some people, eh? :(

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. Thanks for the info., Cdr :D

Hmm, some interesting results. nVidia has just released this tid-bit of information:

nVidia
The Optimiziations for Half-Life 2 shaders are in the 50 series of drivers which we made available to reviewers on Monday [Sept. 8, 2003]. Any Half-Life 2 comparison based on the 45 series driver are invalid. NVIDIA 50 series of drivers will be available well before the release of Half-Life 2.
Kind Regards

I think the Catalyst 3.8s will be released around the same time, and, quoting the driver guy at ATI 'oh and have I mentioned CATALYST 3.8 is gonna blow you away!', apparently its gonna be the best driver they've released since the catalyst brand was started.

the flicker fix drivers have a few tiny bugs  including rendering Jedi Knight Jedi Academy totally unplayable, it looks like a fogging issue from the benchmarks we're running, fingers crossed it will be resolved in the next build.

Further to the surprising HL2 benchmark results, nVidia have released a little more info:

nVidia
The optimal code path for ATI and NVIDIA GPUs is different - so trying to test them with the same code path will always disadvantage one or the other. The default settings for each game have been chosen by both the developers and NVIDIA in order to produce the best results for our consumers.

In addition to the developer efforts, our driver team has developed a next-generation automatic shader optimizer that vastly improves GeForce FX pixel shader performance across the board. The fruits of these efforts will be seen in our Rel.50 driver release. Many other improvements have also been included in Rel.50, and these were all created either in response to, or in anticipation of the first wave of shipping DirectX 9 titles, such as Half Life 2.
Kind Regards
