New mobile phone?

Right I know this is not exactly PC related, but like most IT people I know the mobile phone is not far away!

Do any of you know what the Nokia 8810 phone is like? It's the chrome one. I'm currently using a Nokia 6110.

Cheers

If the 8810 is the little silver one, most of my workmates who have owned it say it is a POS, its very breakable and has poor reception, most of them have moved onto other models.

The Startacs are comparable in features and size, I have a 130 and would recommend it, the V3620 is the same but a lot smaller.

The Nokia 5110 and 6110 series are excellent phones, well made and very durable, a comparative phone would be the Ericsson i888 which is GSM 1800, slightly smaller and with a few nice features, but equally tough and solid as the Nokias.

Hi,

I won a Nokia 7110 from cellnet, so I guess i'm in a position to give a reasonably impartial opinion.

The phone itself is pretty good, certainly an upgrade from the Ericsson SH888 I was using.

The reception, sound, quality and battery life all seem excellent, but I guess thats not what you're really intersted in

WAP itself at the moment is pretty much a gimmick. There are very few sites out there with any kind of WAP content and even fewer with anything useful. There are a few sites which allow WAP access to POP3 accounts which is useful and the BBC news is OK, but thats about it.

The main problem with the phone is that its going to be obsolete in a coupe of months. It can only handle data at a maximum of 14.4Kbs (and usually only at 9.6kbs) whereas given a couple months GPRS phones will be on the market offering data transfer @ 56kbs upwards. (Plus GPRS offers a permanently open connection where you only pay for the data transmitted, not the length of the call)

So all in all its a nice phone with some good feature and it does offer access to the net, but unless you need wireless data access this instant IMHO you'd be better off waiting till the summer and spending your money on a GPRS phone...

(Now if only i could persuade Speccy et al to do a WML version of the Barrysworld website

We had the 7110's at work a few months before they came out because we are developing WAP compliant applications/pages.

I was very impressed with them, they seem to be pretty durable, and have lots of nice features - and not too expensive either, a mere 130 quid. Not to mention they have the cool "press a button and the bottom flies down to reveal the buttons" feature...cue matrix impressions

As for WAP being a gimmick, thats bollox

Some of the stuff we are developing right now.....the usefulness and possibilities would blow your nuts off...you just need a bit of vision

Forgot to add....at the moment they only work at 14.4 as Paul B said, but thats soon to change.... As soon as the mobile phone companies upgrade their networks they will (without having to change your phone) be able to connect you at 56k, so dont worry about future proofing.

I suspect you're right about future content, but there does seems to be a distinct lack of it atm. (either that or I'm looking in the wrong places

Are you certain the 7110 will support faster net connections than 14.4 ?? I was checking the Nokia website and couldnt find anything about GPRS compatibility or am i looking in the wrong place ???

I actually think I got my wires crossed.

What will be 56k soon (without updating your phone) will be standard windows DUN through your mobile from a laptop. I dont know about WAP, but I *think* i heard that WAP will be 56k from existing phones soon too (with an upgrade or a flash?), I cant be sure cos i simply dont know

Right on the subject of mobiles... being a phone salesman i might just point this out to you bods looking to buy a (gah) pay and go type phone - get the One to One - now using a package that "0wnz" the Orange - the vouchers are now time unlimited, and the call costs - well, for the first 2 minutes each day its 30 p per min - but after that 60p, its all 5p a min after that. So in the first instance its the same price as Vodafone BT and Orange, but then completey obliterates them after the 2 mins, 5p a min, regardless of time of day. Thats also national, international, to other mobiles, to one2one mobiles, to local landlines etc..

Just food for thought for you..
Vodafone gonna have to pull their fingers out there arses, there 2p per min will do jack shit for ppl soon..

Mikey,

If you want a gadget, got for one of the new WAP phones (internet browsing) - the Nokia 7XXX series or the siemens S25, if you want a nice toy like the 8810 but you don't want a piece of s**t with a tiny screen that will break if you so much as shake it then get hold of one of the new 8210's (NOK) they are a lot more durable with a bigger screen and are available in a plethora of colours and also a 'snowed silver' and gold.
