Here's a wee blurb about the discovery which lends a slightly different perspective. It's interesting that even if they're classified as humanoids, and not human, they're using cool tools etc. But neanderthals used tools too, as do species of chimps!

I remember a programme, from a while ago, that tried to explain why humans suceeded when other similar species didn't. I think the basic assumption it challanged was the one which stated that our brains were larger, so our intelligence provailed. But in this programme it suggested that it was our ability to walk upright that set us apart from other ape-like cousins, the idea being that we could see danger coming, we could travel quicker, and, more importantly, our hands were free to carry and craft tools...I suppose that's a good explanation of the success of bi-ped humanoids and not humans though...I think we're waiting on DNA testing from this new discovery to see how close they are to us and other surviving species...

I also remember reading that Tolkien studied ancient languages and cultures before he wrote Lord of the Rings, and it's quite probable that many of the things he wrote about may have some basis on reality. Calling this discovery Hobbits is life imitating art (or is that, life imitating art imitating life?). :eek6:

Arent they called children? I have two in my house - do you think I can cash in by selling the story to the News of the World?

You forgot the apostrophe here Trem you uneducated little git!
Except "people" is plural, so it should be "there are", or "there're" (though this is awkward).
Pedantry is kinda dangerous.

Generally you would say "There's" though.

Anyway, I wasn't being pedantic, I was just being an irritating bastard.. you irritating bastard.

Only if you consider "generally" to be "in speech", where the rules of standard english don't and can't really apply anyhow.

These days we call small people children, not miniature people.

Right, and you're prepared to dispute the findings of the scientists that found them? You don't think they can differentiate between a new species of Human and a human child?

No, but have you read the research notes by Dr. Ulnar on the humour bypass operation.

Well first you'd have to recognise the original post as humorous.

It does sound a little strange ... someone finds the skeleton of a little human and now, apparently, there is a whole civilisation of miniature people to be found somewhere according to some of the science writers in the daily papers.

Having just got back from Turkey, however, I am a little out of the loop. How many skeletons were found?

They found quite a few, 6 or 7 I think, and rudimentary tools, and evidence of burning.

I'm guessing they were prehistoric chavs/brummies.

Everyone knows that Historians are like Particle Physicists - they make it all up down the pub then publish it and giggle at people who take it seriously ;)

Dark matter anyone? :m00:
