I've been playing my hunter quite often in the bg. I've found out that hunters can't do shit. Often when you move within visual range of the enemy there will be an inf there, who either backstabs you, or reports to his friends, who then come and make mincemeat out of you. Sure, there are some times when you get lucky, and don't get backstabbed, and actually get to fire off one or two arrows against a caster, but usually you can't kill them for different reasons (bladeturn, friends near, infs near). The only way to MAYBE do some difference is stay with a group, stand in the back and perhaps get a few arrows off. But if you stray from the group you will still wind up in the hands of an inf. Oh, and the quarry escape spells are usually worthless, because the infs use poison, or you get poisoned by a caster. And even if you aren't poisoned there is some minstrel with megaspeed that runs as fast as you until your speed spell ends.
I really hope that you have fun with your hunter, but my experience with a hunter in RvR has almost to 100% been bad. I leveled my spiritmaster to 24 instead, and even if I do get backstabbed now and then, I actually do more damage than I receive usually, which is way more fun.
The hunters may be of more use in normal RvR, outside of the bg's though, where the inf's aren't twice as many as the tanks.
alb scouts tend to stay with the "force" and then move into positions when we know where you all are (well, from what ive seen) then when all hell lets loose, they get the kills in.
as for poisons, i actually dont think many use em, i know i do and i think a couple of others, but thats it, quite a few shun poisons completely. shame i make sure my main weapon is always loaded with snare, if im gonna attack you, ill make sure you cant run away from me
a couple of tips: dont keep to the same old routes, for example going down the mid pk => mb road is always watched heavily, as is the forest to the north of the road. why oh why dont you mids ever go anywhere else? how about the south area? im sure you can run out your PK down there without us seeing you. try to make sure you got a SB in your chatgroup so you know whats going on, but dont group, otherwise you will get extra rp, which is bad the top killers are worth 4rp when they have been alive for a while, the ones just rezzed are worth nowt. if you see a stealther nearby, its often best to drop stealth for 2 seconds and sprint and then restealth, youll see many of the alb infils doing this if we see a SB nearby
a few terms:
pk = portal keep
mb = mid bridge
ab = alb bridge
hb = hib bridge (can you see the pattern?
ck = central keep, currently owned by albion.
I've actually had the same frustrations with my scout
If I solo I get to meet Death, Sticky or some of the other smurfs with way too sharp axes.
If I stay with the group I dont have time to do any noticable damage
But it must get better when everything cons yellow.
Gotta say, I sympathise with the archer syndrome. Although personally, I'm usually one of those hunting through the forest to the north of mpk, and stealthed hiding behind a tree, using terrain to your advantage is a very good idea. You often get whole groups of opposition running up and down the road, completely unaware you're there... in which case it's time to pick a target and pray they don't have a BT on.
Myshra, thx very much for trying to help me, not many albs would actually do that to a mid. Big kudos to you.
Although I actually have to say I know many tricks, for avoiding people, getting out of the pk, or stealth/running tricks. I usually try to avoid all spots where infs usually go, but where ever I go I eventually run into one anyway, unless I am in Thid all by myself of course.
Hmm, the poison thing sounds strange, I think I've only met one or two inf's that DON'T use poison. Might be that the infs around nowadays in Thid are different ones then the ones when I started, right after the patching. Haven't leveled out of there yet.
perhaps i kinda said that wrong, most infils have some evenom, say about 10, but few have it to a high level like 18 say, when you get a very good snare and debuff. archers who tend to be carrying stuff when i str debuff then become encumbered and cant run then as the debuff is 44str. when you get poisoned from some evenom, always check what level it is, greater = your in trouble, those are good snares / debuffs, if the dot is a major or greater, its gonna hurt as well, major does over 100dmg for the poisons life, greater does 150 ish.
lesser / minor poisons + debuffs are crap, you get one of those, dont worry, but just remember, if you land a poison, you cant stealth till 10sec after the last pulse
One thing I think people don't do is use the terrain to their advantage, even stealthers, I think as an archer you should always have in the back of your head that you could be spotted at any time, so do use things like trees, use the hills to keep out of LoS, ok this may make your journey that bit longer, but it may also mean you stay alive longer and come across some unsuspecting assasin.
It all comes down to using your brain, the Bgs were created to test tactics for the particular class you wanted to play without some dirty great purp con running up to you and flattening you into the ground before you've got more than 5 yards. If you find a tactic you are using keeps getting you spotted, try something different, don't be afraid to experiment a bit. Also have a chat with some high levels too, they are a gold mine of advice, it's what i did for my Inf, I picked the brain of my guilds highest lvl Inf and alot of the advice he gave me I'm trying out now
I haven't played hunter in BGs but when I was 25 I went to the Gorge very often. I used to stalk full groups of yellow/orange cons for hours picking them 1 by 1 if they were silly enough to stay after the first one or two went down. I always used trees, bushes or slopes as cover. I sometimes waited like 15 mins before I fired an arrow. I only draw my bow when I was sure I would kill and get away. They had nightshades and scouts and they were looking for me. There is nothing more thrilling than knowing there are a yellow con shade and a ranger out there looking for you while you are going for the next tank. My RvR expierience with my huntress is 100% positive. Even in large scale battle I can get kills. I just place myself in the crowd with a /face macro ready and keep hitting F8. With a fast bow I can take down quite a few people before some enemies F8 catchs me. And if I get hit I usaly got enough endurance left for a little sprint and the speed boost does the rest. Stealth a bit away, rest up and pick your next target.
What really is the problem today is that many people have an assassin alt. Where do these assassins end up? In the bg's of course. Often there is one out of three albs that are infs, sometimes even more. The numbers are also somewhat equal on our side of course. This is the main problem for my bad experience with the bg with my hunter, I think. The assassins are way too over represented in the bg's. I of course can't in any way shout that this is unfair and all, and that the assassins should all stay home. What I am saying is that archers will have a hard time in the bg's, and will probably go down more than the foes they take out. What I said before was that the situation was probably different in "normal" RvR. Not so over represented assassins for one thing. I would rather have one assassin trying to find me instead of five.
Oh, and about hiding behind trees and such, you do know that such places are the first spots anyone that searches for stealthers look, right?
Just an idea, but you might want to try working with and as part of a group. The extra firepower an archer represents is useful to a combat team, and all those assassins (who WILL spot you before you spot them) will think twice about attacking you if there are a couple of ugly trolls with big hammers standing close by.
This whole game is structured around grouping, and a well balanced team is more than the sum of its parts. Even we assassins work best with a group - they give us buffs, heals and support to fall back on after making a strike, we give them security from enemy assassins, a scouting/surprise strike capability and extra melee punch. A lone assassin CAN rack up RPs solo - but either he'll wait a long time between 'safe' kills that he can get away with (and make sure they're safe, and still be in position to hit that avalonian who went skipping by...) or its a case of get a kill, get swarmed, /release, horse and port back, get a kill, /release etc etc.
I am totally aware of that, but one of the hunters abilities is to scout. Hell, your own archer is called a scout. With the current conditions in the bg, let alone when the realm abilities make it's appearance in the game, scouting for archers is/will be almost useless. I know full well, that staying with a group increases your survival rates much, but heck, I should at least be able to scout I think.
First time I were in BG i had my level 22 Warrior.... and he was totally worthless without a group/skald, since a slow troll wont catch anything
So I went for a hunter, who can sneak around the enemy, look for sitting/resting people that stays in the back of the group, while main tanks and such stays in the front.
Normally I would in this case first run with my Spear in my hand, so if I would be attacked by a Infi on my way around, I would be fast to defend myself, if i get a hit on the infi with my spear, he sure gets scared, cos it hurts.
Anyway, when I've gone behind the group, getting in range to shoot that sitting duck, I try to plan my escape route. One good thing is that when you shoot, try standing so close/behind a tree you can, so you quickly can sneak in behind it after the shot (if it would miss, otherwise if the target still survives the shot, shoot an other, real fast... after arrow is fired you first sprint away, trying to get all trees behind you, so it will cover your body, and then stealth and lean off into an other direction, preferably to the PK, where you are safe.
If i would miss the 2'nd shot, or if i get a bad hit and target survives, I do same as if i would have killed him.... but not gonna go too far away.
If the group would notice me before i kill the person, and they start running at me, with minstrel or bard.... use the Speedbuff, sprint and try hiding somewhere...like behind a tree..see the minstrels and the rest run around looking for you.... hopefully they wont see you...otherwise you are doomed.

That's a little bit of nice tactic, which I use quite often... (damn, now i gotto change it when you know it ) works quite well, not allways tho.
But being a hunter in bg is funny, but you have to be aware that a infiltrator could get up to you any time (atleast if you got low stealth as me). Always have a finger on the Speedbuff key, and one on the /laugh...so you can laugh at the poor infi trying to kill you
An other thing, that is quite funny.... is when a infiltrator sneaks up behind me (and i notice it), I attack it with my kickass spear, and the infi goes down... not sure if it's the same for all hunters, but as I am quite heavy spear specced, it works great
And about poisons... the str debuffs (good ones) are very annoying, as someone said above, you get encumbered, if you carry loads of arrows with you.
About dmg'ing poisons.... not very often that i get hit by a strong one....but when I do, I'm quite doomed... and it gets worse if the infil hits me a few more times after the backstab or whatever style he use.
Anyway... that's some of my tactic and I enjoy being hunter in BG... my biggest problems are Sorc's i think...especially Leclya lol
