New Forum Suggestions

Having a rummage through our Forums and planning on archiving some of the *ahem* "less used" (ie deader than a dead thing) Forums and having a smidge of a spring clean and I was wondering if there are any forums we should add, or change the way we present some.

For instance, our halflife forum tries to cover everything in one go. Main game, mods and all. Should we have sub forums for Mods under the main game forum?

Also, game related forums that are missing?

And, whilst i appreciate this General forum covers everything non-gaming by default, should we have some non-gaming forums?

Even a forum to suggest new forums?

To give some semblance of order to the replies, could you please keep to 3 categories:

1. Existing Forums Re-Structured

2. New Gaming Related Forum Suggestions

3. New Non-Gaming Related Forum Suggestions

I know what you lot are like, try to stick to the point and try not to kill people for suggestions you dont happen to agree with. I wont be implementing everything, I'm looking for ideas to build upon, as I already have a load of my own.

Hmm, well there has been some people asking for a Mobile Phones Forum...

I think you should get rid of the RTS / Sims Forums, or, put them right down the bottom of the Page (Saves time scrolling to the Technical Forums)

I honesty think you should do something about the DAoC forums as they seem to dominate the "top topics" list and hardly anyone over there comes into the nice friendly huggy atmosphere of the General Forum.

Just hive off the DAoC into a completely separate database.

Couple of things.

1. Exchange and Mart forum.
Where BW people can advertise their stuff to see who would be interested.

2. REAL help forums for each game (like they have at www.counter-strike.net forums)

Nicer colours.

The Webdev forums description currently breaks my profile table (stretches it out of shape). Add a few spaces in it and that should sort that one.

I don't really want to see lots of non-gaming forums, part of what keeps the general forum so interesting is the sheer volume of different stuff contained in it.

Same for the Halflife forum. There used to be a lot of CS vs. TFC hassle, but thats really a thing of the past.

Thats my thoughts on it.:)

Within the context of the RPS chapter, I'd not try to specify forums with such a high resolution on the front page. Perhaps condense forums to "All things Quake", "All things Tribes" et al like what's already been done with the HalfLife/ModX/ModY thing.

As Laz says, an E&M forum would be nice but there are difficulties there as I'm sure you're well aware. BW will have to be very clear on certain subjects if such a thing will be implemented.

As some people suggested a mobile phone forum; how about a "Gadgets forum"? Discussing things like digital cameras, phones and other peripherals.

And also put the more "used" forums at the top of the page, like Gray said.

And don't change the colour of this place to GAME, ever.

And activate

I thought subscribers were "soon" to have their own forums?
That being the case leave things as they are and we will make our own forums on whatever subject we want.

non?

The new forums wont appear in the list of our forums, they'll be standalone.

1. Existing Forums Re-Structured
Kill:
  • Just Not Used -> Guides, Columns, "None of the above?", "Stuck? Ask the community!", could go on but cba
  • Hosted Site Forums -> Neville comments make most of these useless
  • Sims Category -> MikeyBear don't work here anymore ;)
Restructure:
  • Make Support a Category -> Then make the following headers under it from the existing forums, "Public Servers, BarryServers, BarrySoftware, BarryHosted Sites", would give BarrysWorlds support a more "logical" structure & the support form URL could be slapped across them all uniformly with an announcement.
2. New Gaming Related Forum Suggestions
Add:
  • Clan Recruitment Forum -> Would hopefully kill off all the "join my clan" multi forum spam messages
3. New Non-Gaming Related Forum Suggestions
Add:
  • Suggestions forum -> Self explanatory
  • Regulars forum -> Private, for regulars, may help relax general & make it more open to new people

*shrugs*

Edit: oh & rename the f'kn DAoC forums, i've told Trebz about this before but multiple "general" forums in the whats new link = t3h gh3y

If this all sounds crappy, grab me on IRC & i'll try & make more sense. Use of any of these ideas clearly needs to result in me getting my very own spinky custom title though, obv ;)

Give me a custom title!!!1`¬`!"

Split up the league forums, and put them into subcategories with the appropriate game

ie:

Half-Life > CS, TFC, DOD etc

CS > CS League
TFC > TFC League
etc

Get rid of any of the forums with less than x amount of threads (not including our spammings)

Ban me and Mank from the forums(after giving Mank a custom title), I'm sure you will all agree this is the only way forward.

Restructuing:

Moving Hardware, WebDev etc. furthur up?
I don't know if this is widely legitimate or not, maybe I'm just lazy.

New forums:
Software. As in, in the same vein as hardware - techie things. Software development, firewalls etc. At the moment there isn't really a natural home for that kind of thing.

Don't:
Break up the general forum. The diversity is what makes it. Breaking it up would only make it far less interesting to participate. We can skip threads we don't like easy enough, there's no need to partition it all by force.

Ever wondered why? ;)

Must be the heart warming "die of AIDS", "fuck off DAoC wanker", "stay in your nerdy, nerdy, nerd infested DAoC forums" from the friendly and huggly, snuggly regulars of the General Forum.

Well, can't really blame you... so far only our 'finest' attempted to socialize with you folks. ;)

You mean those who understand sarcasm ?

I am not suggesting the DAoC forums be closed down, just relocated to a separate database, as they swamp the other forums.

I'm not sure if having Technation, OS and Broadband seperate is doing anyone any favours, since it is the same people using all of them.

Had another thought.

Custom Models Forum
Folk could show off their latest custom models for the various games.

Mapping Forum
Folk could show off their latest map creations for the various games.

Config Forum.
Help with setting up the config, aliases and binds for the various games.

They may be already there in a different guise.

The personal Forums wont be linked here at all, and posts in them wont appear in the "Today's Posts" link or in general searches. Its for the best, we could do hundreds of Clan forums and you'd REALLY hate having all those posts appear in searches.
The idea is to link to them directly from your own webspace.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER

Its just an idea, TRY and think about it first, but you could also consider renaming this forum itself. "General" is a bit dull.
Just an idea...
No no, put the gun down....
I didnt mean it....
Ok I did....
But I was just thinking aloud....
You know....
Ooh thats gonna leave a mark....

If everything is going to become Game.net, why not rename it Barry's World?

combining the techy forums seems like a good idea too imo. one place to go for all your techy needs. slimming down the old place is starting to grow on me if you will :) if it's needed I'd like to help out modding tech. someone in there has to defend unix *rolls eyes lecherously*
