new comp problem

I just bought a new mobo and cpu to replace my old athlon 800 that fried. So i ordered meself a KD7-G (think it was the g ver) and a AMD XP 2100+.

Anyway 1st boot up went ok, started installing the drivers for mobo and other stuff. Then as i was installing the 4-in-1 drivers my computer shut down. I restarted and checked cpu temps etc everything ok ish aroud 45-51 degrees. I then left the computer for a while then came back to have a fiddle, only this time when i botted the computer the computer started then 3 seconds after pressing the button it shut down again.

I checked all the cables etc and then tried again, same problem tho after 3 seconds it just shuts down without any beeps. SO i thought maybe its the psu so i changed around the psu's but they all seem to do the same thing.

Anyhow i can get it starting now so i can sometimes get to the bios menu but if it does start at all it still shuts down within a minute maybe less of starting. Im presuming this is some power problem but ive tried these psu's: 300w, 340w, 400w, 550w.

I basically have nothing plugged into the computer at the moment only gfx card (ati radeon pro 9500), cpu and pc2100 ddr dimm.

Specs:
XP 2100+
Abit KD7-G
Crucial PC2100 DDR 256MB

Any ideas what the problem may be?. I have no idea if its the cpu or the motherboard.

also this mobo has 3 temperatures in the bios, case temp, outer shell? temp, and core temp

case is about 35, cpu outer shell is 41-50 but inner core is 100+ 1?!?. is that normal? :)

Gonna be an arse to replace coz i had to wait a month for the radeon pro card to be available over here :(. so my 30 day warranty at dabs is gone so cant replace with them :(

anyway, anyone got any ideas?

As a thought - have you tried setting all the memory settings to their slowest - CAS delay, timings, etc ?

Set the BIOS settings to 'Fail-safe' if there is one, and work your way up from there ?

The 3 second to shutdown thing is a power related problem : either the PSU, particular faulty parts in the motherboard, incorrectly placed CPU (unlikely unless you're a square peg in a round hole person) : or the most likely : short on the motherboard. Try running it out of the case : probably will be fine. Then just sticking it back in the case making sure all connections from board to case are fine (i.e. the standoffs are all in correct positions) : That's usually the trick.

Give it a shot.

I had a old mobo do this to me. Turns out the power rectifiers on the mobo were dodgy.

In my case, the VCore voltage would steadily drop until it got to a point where the CPU would cut out. It was totally random how long the mobo would work for. It may work for a week without trouble or it may not even get to the bios screen.

Anyway, if you can get to the bios screen, check your voltages are steady. Make sure the Vcore (or others) aren't dropping below an acceptable level.

aye i was running it from on top of a cardboard box. with just gfx card, dimm and cpu in.

I have just sent the mobo back to dabs to be replaced. I tried switching on the computer this morning but it wouldnt start. I found the cable that goes to the psu is dead for some reason.
Anyway i took apart my own computer and put my cpu in the new KD7-G, but the computer wouldnt boot still. I cant even get to bios now.

Tried the new cpu in this old mobo KG7-Raid and it seemed fine so i presume its just the mobo is dead. I have a fealing the psu i was using is a bit dodgy. It was in the computer when my old athlon 800 fried, and now this has a similar problem and since the cable for psu is dead for some reason. Anyway to be on the safe side i ordered a new psu too.

Ended up blowing my 340W psu up just before when i plugged it in, noticed the switch was halfway between on and off just as i plugged in the power cable, hell of alot of smoke! :D

Hopefully replaced mobo should run fine.

Ta for the replies

Generally I would of said the mobo since even if the processor was fooked you would get beeps etc.

aye i tried the fan in fan4 (some mobo's say use fan4 for cpu fan) and also fan slot 1 (which acording to the manual to use) but neither made a diff. I think the mobo just fried tbh. No idea why im hoping cpu is fine, I have a feeling it was the psu which was in both my comps that fired :), ordered meself a 460w enermax psu to be on the safe side. Pretty much tried everything i can think of :/
