New Car, Insurance.

We've just bought a Mitsubishi Colt Cyborg, this car is a 1.6i 16 valve car, thats it, no turbo, no thrills(apart from the sexy MIVEC engine and the 175 bhp it produces).

I currently drive a Toyota Celica GT4, this car is a four wheel drive, twin entry ceramic turbo, 16 valve and 250 bhp.

Why am I telling you this?

Because those fuckers at Tesco insurance are charging me another £100 to swap my insurance over. How the fuck do they work out that the Colt is a higher insurance group? It isn't like they are stolen every minute(there ain't many around), granted its nippy, but its only 175 bhp ffs!!

To top it all off I turned 30 in October, which, apparently means cheaper insurance. Pfffff. TWATS!!!!

No, you see if I do that it has to start again, I have to pay the full whack again and start from the beginning.

They have you by the balls tbh.

Not too bad, definately no worse than the GT4(which is an import as well).

Perhaps its because car insurance as a whole is going up?

The GT4 uses mainly UK parts, I had a GTR.

TBH I've never heard of a Mitsubishi Colt Cyborg, is it available as a UK car? The Celica is, so most of the parts are cheap.

Yes you do have a point there, the Colt isn't available here. Hrm:(

I still think Tesco can fuck off though, bastards.

While we are on about parts, I had to order a cv joint for the Celica today, £110 FFS!!!!

You love me good Melly;)

I remember the article that showed how much it would cost to build a £14,000 Focus out of parts....ended up at something like £32,000 :)

QW on Top Gear a while back was talking about a Euro law that was a strong possibility.
Basically all spare parts would have to be manufacturers, putting companies that make spare parts or sell non manufacturer parts (Halfords etc) out of business. The manufacturers were saying that the cheap alternatives were not safe, bollocks a bulb is a bulb. They have a lot of pull in the Euro parliaments because they pay so much tax etc that governments were listening to them.

I've no idea on the current status, but it's worse than straight bananas imo.

huh ? do you have no 'no claims' bonus from previous years? , other insurers will take into account any FULL years 'no claims' with other insurers, you'll only lose a few months bonus! (unless you have none or if you're on month 11 of this year or something - then its probably worth sticking it out till you get another years discount)

I've changed insurers every year for 5 years, It's always ended up more expensive year on year, but I've always found cheaper than the renewal. When i changed vans a couple of months after the policy started last year, as they wanted to charge me more than double, swapped insurers and had no problem. (except a £30ish charge from the insurers i was with for cancelling mid policy - missed THAT in the small print)

BTW if you have a named driver under 30, you'll see nothing of any 30+ discount :(

I mean if I change my insurance over the policy will have to start from scratch, I realise that my NCB will be ok, but this policy runs until May so I will lose a few months.

Trem.

You are prolly being hit harder cos the car is an import (and not available in UK)

Best to bite the bullet and let the insurance run. (and buy "british" next time ;) )

When you need to renew, try www.esure.co.uk, I save a packet with them

I swore I would only buy Jap imports, the GT4 has impressed me so much. The condition of it is fantastic for the age, they dont grit the roads or summat over there so the cars take less stick, there ain't much space to thrash around all the time so the engines are sweet, theres a very strict law over there about emisions and the like so the cars have to be tip top mechanically. The extra insurance is a big problem but not as big a problem as rotting arches ;)

those tv ads oferring cheap insurance online are muck, I went through the thing online giving my details, took bloody ages, only to be told they are unable to offer me a quote, and to ring a number needing more details, I'm talking about elephant.co.uk prolly only give you insurance if your record is perfect.

That AA service offering you cheapest quote from a range of providers is a con as well.

Happy - what you say is true. What I dont do is religously give away my cash every year to the same insurance company.

I always check the prices of at least 10 other companies before I decide.

This time esure was the cheapest by far - and I always talk to someone. These online forms are great, but what happens if you make a mistake?

You may as well do what you've said and cough the extra £100 mate :( Nowt else for it. I doubt if the car is a higher insurance group mind you, more likely it has a higher percieved value ? Or is newer ? Plus the "admin charges " these people do, and theres you answer.
I bought my own car a couple of years ago after years of company cars, and , with no no-claims at all, the first quote I got was for £900, for a Vectra 2.5 ffs, and I was 36 at the time ! 2nd phone call, £600. Third phone call, £350. Jesus, it pays to ring round :)

You should qualify that by saying that it would be £32,000 for anyone buying all the parts from a Ford main dealer, otherwise it sounds like you're just getting a great deal buying the car for £14,000 in the first place. Or something.

Incidentally..

:(

This should hopefully come down a lot when I'm 25, since I've got 6+ years of company car driving experience (albeit not my car, but still for SD&P).

I called nearly thirty last year - second to last was £160 cheaper than ALL of the others. (tried every one in the yellow pages with a freephone number)

You should have started with the last company first and you would have saved an extra 50p or so for the phone calls. Next time make a list then start at the bottom.
