YouTube - Boston Dynamics Big Dog (new video March 2008)
[youtubevid]W1czBcnX1Ww[/youtubevid]

I know, blah, blah, google video thread. It might even be a Glen too.

However, has anyone else seen this before? I genuinely can't work out if I think this is the creepiest thing, or the coolest thing ever. When that guy kicks it, my gut response is that he's being cruel, which means on some level I don't even view it as a machine. The way it copes with being shoved, or sliding on ice, just seem so staggeringly natural.

Anyway, thought some of you might find it interesting.

I don't why, but it seems more...insectile, than anything else, which creeps me out even more.

I think they should give it an itty, bitty dolls head. Then it would be utterly terrifying.

I really don't like that, that is fucking scary. It also scares me more that it sounds like a giant wasp :eek7:

Its like 2 people facing each other in a panto horse type arrangement.

Hi Lou

Thanks for the video; it's quite amazing :) Chop off a leg and we'll be left with:

(We probably shouldn't suggest this, otherwise Raytheon will try it ...). For those interested, the Boston Dynamics website has more information.

Kind regards

Most scary thing about that is "DARPA" at the end

yeah just imagine it with a couple of mini-guns mounted on it.

still, amazing though. I've seen it with the cables still attached. this free-range stuff rocks.

I agree with you Damini, the thing that makes it creepy is because I empathise with it.

I can't see the vid from here, this PC is too slow for YouTube, but I've seen the wired version before. The scariest thing would be the noise of the approaching diesel generators, and knowing what is coming.

prolly will end up like that, if they develop it more make it look like a camel/horse/donkey deploy 100,000 of these in an oil rich country with uber wepons on and america is sorted.

reminds me more of the tachis from ghost in the shell tho

I just watched the first vid, and I had forgotten quite how creepy that thing is. I think the weight of a minigun is a long way off, but there is plenty of deathtech which it could carry.

I've seen a video like this before, except it was referred to as a mule or donkey - quite impressive indeed.

Was I the only one that felt sorry for it when it got kicked? My emotional response to it was weird. It's a robot.

Oh... when it slipped too.

I almost felt sorry for it, then I remembered terminator and the fact it looks like a hunter from hl2....

After that I wanted to shoot it :p

Its legs are jointed like Teh Satan!!!!

I dont feel empathy for it I just want to blow it back to hell :p

Theres something deeply unsettling watching inanimate matter move in the same way as animals...

Or maybe attach a Fleshlight.

You're the second person I know to mention Fleshlights in a week. I didn't know what one was until I started working here! *shudders*

Read about it last year, something about taking inspiration from animals themselves (Deer as I recall was a main animal they looked at). Nice to see its coming along well, but I have to admit, when he kicked it, I did think 'Evil bastard'.
