Networking

Hello, I'm not going to be online much at the mo due to needing to sort out the home network (means buying vast quantities of cabling...) but I was wondering if I could squeeze a checklist out of you peeps :)

I'm going to buy a big length of CAT5 and then cut it down for the various lengths (long and short) that I need. However, for sake of being thorough, I'm going to install wall sockets for the connectors, so as to have a robust and subtle set up. I'll also be doing my own interconnecting wires rather than buying (though I'm building up a bit of stock anyway, so I might get away without that...).

I read that getting hold of an f "RJ45 Crimping Tool" is a necesity for doing plugs, which I'd never considered, and I'm wanting to check if I need any special tools for doing sockets with? Does anyone have any handy "never fail" guides for wiring them up? (sockets and plugs).

Thanks very much. It seems pretty easy, but I don't want to be twisted up in cable, socket, power drill and wall plug only to find that I need some fancy tool to get it nicely connected up!

Cheers :)

If you get the right sockets, there are 'grips' in them that grab hold of the wires - you won't need extra tools for this. You'll need crimping tool for cabling and fly leads. The only other tool that would be useful to borrow/buy is a RJ45 cable tester. It's a bit of a bitch when one won't work, and you don't know which end/cable/wire is causing the problem. Don't go external without metal conduit to earth it. Otherwise you should'nt have a problem - if I can do three points in my house, I'm sure you can handle it :)

Ta Bids :)

I got myself a Crimper from my girlfriends dad (saves £20 on the overdraft :)), I'll have a look about for cable testers. Cheers.
