Networking problem

I have 2 PC's

1 Windows XP
1 Windows 9x

I've installed file and print sharing on the win9x machine and i've shared the folder i've wanted and i've given it an IP of 192.168.0.2 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0

I've plugged an RJ45 into the network card of the win9x machine and the other end into the winXP machine.

I gave the winXP machine an IP address of 192.168.0.1 with the same subnet as the above machine. BUT ... after resetting both machines, the winXP machine claims the network connector is unplugged ... :(

Could someone tell me what i've done wrong or what i'm missing out on doing please!

First guess would be you're not using a cross-over cable between the two machines.

I'll second that.

When you enable the LAN connections, can you ping either PC?

I tried pinging from the winXP machine but it said 'Destination unreachable'

I'm guessing the cable I have isn't a crossover :(

If the cable colours in the plugs go in the same order from left to right (or right to left) at each end, then it's not a cross over cable.

probably.

OK, so once I get a cross over cable, I presume winXP will stop moaning about no connection when in fact there is one?

I know networking these two operating systems is not the best idea, but it's only for transferring files.

Yes, from what you've said in you initial post re IP and so on.
From XP's point of view there isn't a valid connection even though there is a bit of wire strung between them. The signals are going in one end, and going to the completely wrong place on the other end and no sense is made of it all.
I'd imagine that you'll be able to go from XP to 95 share OK, but you might find going from the 95 to XP more of a problem. Not sure as I'm not very up on XP's file sharing ... is it Home or Pro? I thought I'd read that Home had a simplified file sharing mode.
If you need to go from 95 to XP, and have problems, try to log onto the 95 pc with an account and same password, as an account on the XP box that would have access to the share.

Success! Managed to get a crossover cable and voila, all sorted. Mucho appreciation to all that helped. (and those that didn't :p )
