right - i got my networkin cards installed and the wires all connected and everythings ok. the thing is, the ME computer can see the XP computer and access the files but the XP computer cant see the ME computer! ive done all the IP address and all that and the XP machine can ping the ME machine thro DOS, it just wont show the ME computer in the networking window!
the annoying thing is i want to share an ADSL connection from the ME computer.

does anyone know if u can just install xp on the me computer without activation or anythin?

you would need a seperate copy of XP installed on the other machine, as you can only have 1 copy running at the same time.

But there is no reason why to 2 computers cant network correctly, do you have sharing enabled on the ME computer?

Also try find the ME machine using search(in the start button) rather than the network icon.

We have a similar problem with XP & 9x over the Uni network here at UMIST. We all have shared folders set up over the workgroup but a friend never appears on the list and cannot be found. Also, he never seems to be able to log into my folder.
It's all a bit odd really.

WinME : Enable File and Printer Sharing and reboot, it will appear on the network after the reboot.

of course, if your not sharing any files on the WinME machine, dont bother with it.

also, it might be wiser to use the WinXP machine to share the net access, WinME is the devil spawn itself and should never be trusted with anything except the bin.

are you able to ping each other?
YES
You are networked, there is nothing you need to worry about

I cant see the other machine in Network Neighbourhood
This is the user-based way of UNC paths (\\server\share) designed by Microsoft, unless there is shared folders and printers on the machine it will NOT come up on the list, since it wont tell the master browser of its existance, if the machine is not sharing anything the master browser will discard its information.

Why does that happen?
the Master Browser (and backup browser) will only collect information on servers and clients with shares, this was originally designed around large networks with 300+ machines. This system allows users to quickly browse to machines with shares without having to go through individual machines trying to find them.

I want to be able to see my machine on the Network Neighbourhood
Enable File and Print Sharing on the Win9x machine in the Network properties, and share a single folder out, within a couple of minutes you should be able to browse to the machine in question (as long as your gateway is setup properly)

What is a Gateway?
a Gateway is a system that controls the flow of packets through your network, or is supposed to. :) to make an efficient network you add the IP address of one machine (the NT/2k/XP machine) as the Gateway of the other machine (Win9x). as an example.

Win9x machines IP settings.
IP : 192.168.0.2
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.0.1 (this is the NT/2k/Xp machine)

the Nt/2k/XP machines IP settings.
IP : 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : (the gateway is left blank since this machine is the gateway of the network)

simple
