Network game speed question

Hi ppl,

We have been playing HL a lot at work, prolly last 6 months and seem to have an oddity!

There were a few players with shitty PC's, approx P300, 16MB gfx card, etc, and they used to play poorly against the rest of us who had slightly better PC's, approx P4, 1.2Ghz.

However, we have recently bought some new P4, 2.2 with GeForce 3/4 and the shitty players have started to use those and all of a sudden, they seem to be quite good!

We know they aren't cheating as we ensure cheats are disabled.

Does anyone know if you have a fast PC, running say 40% faster than others on the network whether this affects hits, etc?

I know some racing games where 2 people accelerate at the same speed in the same car, but the one who has the better PC seems to pull away quicker as his PC can process the data much faster.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Tubs.

P.S. If anyone needs a clan member please contact me. I have a P4 1.4, Geforce 3 with either 512k connection or 2MB connection depending where I am. :D

Faster Pcs = Processing events faster = better response.

Also, depending on the type of network you have cuold mean that certain machines are "polled" more often/quicker than others and therefore receive more updates.

Thanks, I thought that may be it, but I didn't know for certain.

Does anyone know if there is a way we can set up ppl's configs so that games are played on a more level playing field?

If not, I guess I'll just have to get better! :(

Well tubs, things like that happen more often in Q3, not necessarily hit issues, but if you get over 125 fps in Q3 you can jump onto ledges most people cant and things like that, but thats the Q3 engine. You were reffering to the HL engine, the only fps based thing in HL is the speed the guns fire, they fire fractionally (and I mean fractionally) slower when on a machine at 30fps or lower when compared with a 100fps machine. This makes not much difference to the gameplay and I cant see it making much difference in game. But remember, the smoother the gameplay on your machine the smoother your reactions can be and the more consistent you can be, if you have inconsistent fps you will probably play more inconsistently :p

Internet connection speed affects the game more than FPS or the speed of a machine will.....

TBH with u i think u are making assumptions for a start it is only bloody CS and lets face it not THE most processor intensive game out thre.

As we speka im on a LAN at my m8s house as i have no i-net at home and both on same connection identical NIcs and wire etc etc and im on a P2 350 16 mg gfx card 128 meg ram. Him on the other hand is on an Athlon XP 2100+ 512 DDR ram and a Geforce 4 Ti4600. And i own his ass :p which ever machine im on his or mine and he hasnt noticed any dif apart resolution and so all i can say is i think it might be Pshycological (Yes i know i cant spell) IE.

I have a faster computer therefore i own all

Simple

:p

Chances are they're used to playing with a poor machine, give them a better one, and they perform better.

When I was training to be a cameraman, I used some of the worst equipment going. The skills I learnt on this equipment gave me a sound basis for when I started using good equipment. There aren't many motorsport cameramen I know who can do a better job then me, and I've only been doing this for 5 years.
