Network Card Trouble.. URGENT HELP NEEDED

Right ok, hit a snag, im selling my Computer Today, but i wanted to backup all my Vids, pics etc onto my Other Comp, so i brought my Other comp down stairs, and connected it Peer-to-Peer. There was no joy with them connecting to each other.

So, then i got another Cable, tried that, STILL didnt work...

So anyway, after been advised to look for my Hub i did so, took me f00kin ages to foind it (Was behind my Old 20" Monitor - Obvious Place to hide it? hmm)

So i connected two cables into the Hub, one light Flashed, that of the Computer i just brought down, but my Main Computers light on the Hub didnt. So, i got another Cable, but again, the light wouldnt work. This lead me to believe that my Network Cables where all f00ked.. but as one last test, i switched cables around (So the computer i brought down had my Main Computers Cable) and it still lighted up, so now, its obvious that my Network Card is somewhat fucked.

My Main Computer is Windows 2000 based, and my other comp is Windows 98.

I really really really really REALLY need some sort of Answer within mmmmmm, 2hours, because i want around 4gb of Data backed up then format the computer and install Win2000 again with drivers.

Ok, to attach the PCs directly, you need a crossover cable, which is wired up slightly different from a standard network cable (Google will have the answer)

But if the network card is fubar, all you can do is run out and buy another. Or backup to CD.

Not nessesarily! I had the same thing! It was me and a m8 tryin to set up a lan. We do it often and normally goes without too much problems. He had 98 I had 2000, same as you, and not matter what we did we couldnt get the damn comps to see each other! Next day and 2 new cables all was well :) However you could try checking the network card in system manager and make sure there are no conflicts, also try forcing the speed down to 10Mbps..... also 2000 needs to have a lan connection setup in the netowtking folder, nest to your dial up/Internet connection!

No he doesn't! If he has a HUB this will take care of it!

It says its fine in Device Manager, but where the Clock is in the Bottom Right Corner, there is a Monitor with a big "X" going thru it.

When i hover the Icon it says "Local Area Connection - Network Cable Unplugged"

I went thru the Win2000 Troubleshooter File and it said the icon in the Taskbar means "The Media is Disconnected"

OK, you're running out of time.. so try:

Reinstalling the Win2k network card - changing PCI slot or whatever.

Swap the cards?? If they're different brands then maybe one will work in 2k better than the other?

Well, ive decided to just throw all the stuff onto Disc, ive done 3 disc already, which is all my Vids, may take up another 2..

Then maybe another 2/3 to backup other stuff...

So its gonna take about an hour ot two to get this formatted and win2000 re-installed

kewl, the x on the monitor suggests serious cabling issues! As at least when I had problems it said the cable was plugged in!
