Hey all. Normally don't post in here but have a problem I thought you m0ngs could help with :D :D :D

=====

Mate of mine (BuffySh33p) is having trouble with his new rig.

The specs are:

GV-7VAXP Motherboard.
Athlon XP 2200 processor (throroughbred).
512 mb DDR 2700 RAM (crucial).
PNY GeForce 4 Ti4600.
Western Digital Caviar 80 gb 8mg cache 7200 rpm.
Enermax 350w PSU.
Pioneer 16x 40x Slot DVD drive.
GlobalWin 802 case.
£8 Cooler Master Fan.

Running in WinXP Pro (without service pack atm).

Bought but not fitted:

Thermaltake GeForce 4 heatsink.
YS tech 80mm fan.

=====

The problem is that games keep on crashing back to windows - BUT, Windows runs fine (only game that's not crashed is Metal Gear Solid!).

The system and CPU temps are reaching 55 - 60 at times.

Graphics card is also quite hot.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

=====

Is this overheating (CPU or graphics card)? Or a lack of power? Or is it merely a software problem?

ps. I smell. PS. EMBS SMELLS.

First it could be the GFX overheating so get Buff to replace the GF4 fan with the Thermaltake one.

I second what Embattle said. Though rearranging the cards inside may help. New PC builders tend to put the cards in from top to bottom. If you have a card in the top PCI slot, take it out and move it down.

to be honest it doesn't sound like graphics card overheating at all, I'd attack BIOS updates and possibly FFR before removing the stock cooler (which incidentally is pretty damn good)

to discount heat operate the system with the case off on it's side and see if you get the same locks - I'm more thinking BIOS or OS are the culprits, if you haven't had windoze installed for long I'd re-blast XP onto your box and try again, it can do some pretty quirky things!
