I have a Tbird 900, Geforce2 GTS 32MB, 128MB RAM , DX8, SB Live Value soundcard, Cable Modem, Via 4 in 1 (4.28), Nivida 12.40 drivers.

My problem is that when playing Counter Strike I get terrible frames per second. This also goes for HL too.

I play CS at 640x480 and use Opengl mode, I have high quality sounds disabled. When playing my FPS drops well below 60 and in to the 40's. This happens when playing single player HL too. I have Vsync off and set fps_max to 99.

I seem to get decent performance in 3DMark 2001
I get 2890 marks at 1024x768 32bit (default test).
I get 6675 in 3DMark 2000 at default test 1024x768 16bit.

Sisoft Sandra test suggest my processor is working fine too.

I have tried tweaking my geforce settings and I am not using FSAA either.

I have tried all diff versions of geforce2 drivers and I cant solve this problem.

If anyone can help me then please do as I am at my wits end with this anoying problem.

I have just installed q3 and would like to know what you guys get running demo127 at normal and high quality graphics settings. This will allow me to tell if my system is working ok.

Please post system specs when post scores, I would really appreciate as much feedback as possible.

Thanks in advance.

.

I recommend going here

http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake3/FPS_visuals.html

and downloading the .cfg files and try each one in turn, see what you find a reasonable compromise between eye candy and performance and see what results you get in a time demo.

My system is

Athlon 800
GF2 GTS pro
256 ram
SB Live

and I get about 110 - 120 ish on a demo127. My config is tweaked A LOT and is primarily a 'performance' config, not an eye candy config.

Ok I just ran the benchmarks myself and got the following

Using

Timedemo 1
Demo demo127

Normal graphics settings = 106fps
High Quality = 103fps
1024x768 Max Settings (32bit colour and textures, full geometric detail and textures) 69fps.

All test were done with wall marks, dynamic lights etc etc on.

Please post results and let me know if my system is ok.

Thanks.

That seems ok dude. 106 on normal settings looks good to me. With tweakage (if u wanted more fps) you could get 20-30 more I reckon.
Try the .cfg from that link above with the best fps settings and see what you get. Also, make sure Full screen anti-aliasing and v-sync are off in the graphics card control panel. Also you could look at http://www.geforcefaq.com

Thanks for your help I appreciate it. I am not really looking to tweak my config. The main aim of my benchmarking was really just to see if my system is performing the way it should be.

Thanks again for your help.

What motherboard have you got? I suggest you checkout your bios settings if you have KT7 or similar.

Also what os are you using and is ACPI in its infinite wisdom sharing everything on one irq. (check device manager for details).

I suggest http://go.to/kt7faq if you have that motherboard

I have done a bit of testing on my pc.
Spec:
TBird 1ghz
256meg CAS2 PC133 SDRAM
GeForce 256 DDR (nvidia 12.41 driver)
Win2k (clean install)
Quake3 High Quality Mode (clean install)

demo001 results:
Failsafe Bios Settings = 63.2fps
Optimised Bios Settings = 75.5fps
ACPI Off with Optimised Bios Settings = 83.3fps (requires new win2k install with special instructions)
As above plus Via 4in1 Drivers installed = 110.7fps

Tweaking pays off dont you think? :)
