Right my gaming rig is very far behind the current times.

It is currently a

p3 600 512mb ram AGPX2
tnt2 ultra

Now,

what can I do to it to get better graphics? I havent got that much wedge to spend on it.

What Games you wanna play on it?
How much Dosh you wanna part with to buy the Gear?

If you wanna play the latest games (ie BF1942 or that new UT2002) you may wanna upgrade your Graphics Card and Processor.

Does your Motherboard Support AMD or Pentium? How olds it?

The Memory is fine 512mb will do almost anything.

I would go for a AMD Athlon 1800+ Processor, they are around £60.
Graphics Card i would go for a Geforce4 Ti4200 or a Geforce3 Ti200, they cost in the region of £100 to £130

THe motherboad is a slot1 style abit for p3.

I wanna get it upgraded for as cheap as possible if i can. I dont want to buy an amd

Hmm, Pentium Processors (Around 1ghz) will set you back around £130, well this one is, which is the Cheapest one on Ebuyer.

I suppose if you live near any decent Computer Fairs, you would get one for about £30/40 cheaper, so if you do decide to go for a P3 1ghz and /or/ a Graphics Card, it will be around £200.

I used Ebuyer coz it gives a nice rough estimate on prices, no doubt there will be cheaper stores around the internet

If you dont want to piss about changing your mobo (which you really should do) I suggest a quick trawl through Ebay. You can get old stuff (and lets face it, slot 1 is old ) pretty cheap from there.

Slot 1 PIII 800, £36 atm.

And then maybe get a gf2 mx400, for like £30 - 40. Ive got one of these, running with a Tbird 850 and it runs most stuff, admittedly on lower settings, but plenty runnable.

You can get a duron 1.3 ghz for like 40 quid these days tony, and a decent board for 80 or even less.

Geforce 3 ti 200's are dirt cheap and will run anything and everything that you have mentioned. They are about 90 or 100 quid these days, maybe even less by now?

I mean hell an amd xp 1600+ costs about 55 quid ?

Its in a very late generation of production, there are no crashing related bugs or anything like that anymore, open your mind and get an amd if you want a cheap option. Cheap and powerful at the same time

Forget trying to upgrade your current chip, going from a 600 to an 800 will do jack shit and you're spending money on something that wont help. You could spend out 200 quid and get a bloody fast amd duron setup or a little more (cause you'd need ddr ram for an xp chip in most situations) and get an xp setup.

With a Geforce TI 4200 from Dabs (120'ish), total should be about £250-£300.

The cheapest option is obviously to limit the upgrade to CPU and GPU, however, IIRC the highest rated Slot 1 CPU is a 1Ghz (133Mhz FSB), and I've only ever really seen 800EBs knocking around on eBay, if that doesn't cut it you are looking at replacing the mobo and RAM as well.

Dimebag may have no tact, but he has a point. With limited cash it may be an idea to got for a small £40 Ghz Duron, a mobo with PC2100 RAM, a GF3 Ti200 (or GF4 Ti4200) setup and then upgrade it later by swapping CPU for an XP.
