Ok, to expand. Deathsight to 50 is probably the best PvE you'll get, since you'll get less resists, and the max AF debuff, which, any necro that has gone to Caer Sidi will tell you, is a MUST. As it makes it REAL easy for tanks to do nice damage. You get the high spec versions of life tap and power tap, which really makes a necro really good. The powertap gives you a max of the creature's level back in power (Thank Xorta for that info). So at level 50, soloing mobs in Avalon where the entrance mobs range from 47 to 58. Of course, this is a nice way to check the level of creatures, as succesful powertap will tell you its level.

As for the other specs. Well, painworking gives you the nice AE DoTs, as well as a PBAE DoT. Death servant is pretty much like the Enchanter 3rd line. Don't go there.

Most people have gone Deathsight, as that is where the LoS issue is. One or two have gone Painworking, and it's a nice varient, but, well, post 50 hunts, I don't think they have any use in uber mob hunts.

Some people go full 50 Deathsight and then the rest either in Painworking or Death Servant. Some go for the "enchanter" varient, which is 48 DSi, 24 Painworking, 6 DSe. If you get your Painworking to a decent level, you get the PBAE DoT, which is quite nice for popping stealthers. Nothing more amusing than randomly PBAE DoTing a choke point (MG doors, climb point, stairs at MG) and watching as a stealther pops and runs off taking DoT (low) damage and probably hammering their stealth button.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit.

go full DS till 40 then just respec if you dont like it... and brannor you say that they wont be useful in uber mob hunts - you forget every pet counts when hitting apoc/other, and if you go 44 pw (last pbae dot) you can get a very respectable 31 +11 (42) in deathsight.
