Why would it be a joke?
Melee resists do nothing for a necro while they have a pet - the pet has its own melee resists which are not affected by those of the "shade". When pet is lost the necro has 10% HPs left - no melee resists will save you then. So melee resists are best ignored.
Capping +power at best will give you enough power for half a spell - waste of SC slots.
+str/+con/+hits do not transfer to pet - so are useless. A little str helps for carrying loot but thats all the use it is.
Or maybe the joke is that you choose to reply criticising someone elses work without knowing what your talking about

Haven't tested, but every SC template & post about them I've seen on VN says magic resists transfer, but melee resists don't. Hence I'm capping all magic resists on my template.
I won't use a lvl51 staff btw, as it tends to wear down rather quickly...

it caps ever stat and resist that are important to the shade and caps magic resists that transfer. It also nearly cap's all the skills and could be swizled if you wern't sight specced.

my brother got hold of a bracer called Deathsight perfection bracer +8 Deathsight, +8% cold +1 power. Yet when he puts it on, he receives none of these bonuses??

If you are too low level for an item you will not get any bonuses from it.

They are lvl 41 bracers,i got a couple myself.
At lvl 41 i put them on and they did nothing,at lvl 42 they worked
I believe they get toned down to +6 skill in some patch though.

ok, question:
do magic resists transfer to pet or not?
i keep reading that they do, i read on herald that they do (im 99% sure i did...) but on irc whenever the topic comes up I get the standard kiddies telling me "no of course they dont you noob" etc...
can someone clarify? do they or don't they ?

That thing with the buff cap.. That's got NOTHING to do with the item cap. Items are capped at lvl/2+1. The 50% buff cap ONLY comes into play with racial resists/spell buffs. So doing 27+% in items is just a waste. Maybe I misunderstood something tho?

From what I can tell the INTENTION is that melee resists do not transfer to the pet, but magic resists should.
1.57 (and for that matter 1.60) as far as I know do not have this working correctly - so magic resists are not being passed to the pet either.
Resist buffs should currently be working correctly on the pet.
Clear? No - I didnt think so either.
