Nate wants to do this, Nate has done some research, Nate will now list what he thinks is required. Nate wants to know if anyone has done one before/knows what to do/what Nate is missing.

So I need:
  • Spark Plugs
  • Engine Oil
  • Anti Freeze
  • Fuel Filters(I've read that my cars Oil Filter doesn't get replaced as it lasts the life of the engine and requires purchasing a bigger part which isn't easy to get hold of) so just the Air Filter.
  • Sump Plug Removing/Placing Tool
  • Sump Plug washers
  • Two Jacks
  • A bucket
My car is a Renault Clio ph2 Dynamique 1.5 Diesel so I need to find the right spark plugs/engine oil/filters to fit, right? I found a handy video of a similar car albeit 16v. The guy uses Paraffin

or some shit to flush the oil? Do I have to do that?
Nate thanks you for your time.

  • A calculator to see exactly how much(if any) Nate will save by doing it self.

Replace the two jacks with one jack and two axle stands. Jack up the car and then put it on the stands before you start working underneath it. A funnel makes it a lot easier to pour the new oil in. Depending on the car you might have to jack it up pretty high to get a bucket under there. I generally use an old washing up bowl. Do you have a spark plug socket?

Don't forget to despose of the old oil properly.

Just seen your edit. I've never had a diesel myself but I thought they had glow plugs rather than sparks? I recommend getting the Haynes manual for your car and checking through that before you do anything else. They can usually be got cheap off eBay or a big second hand book shop.

I don't drive and even I know they use glow plugs in diesel. I think you should get a garage to fix it.

You may have a point Toht, but just paying for it will remove the manly feeling one gets when working on his own car. I do have a moustache right now so I must show my alpha male dominance of the car to the neighbours.

True, can't put a price on that ;)

Can get a full service for little more than that from a local garage, is it worth the hassle to save £20 or so?

Edit, OK it's sort of manly but it is also a bit of a long job if you haven't done it before!

You only replace glow plugs when they die, so if yours are fine, cross them off the list. Put it this way - you unscrew your existing glow plugs and some crap falls down the hole. Now you've got a cylinder with crap in it, and all to replace something that wasn't faulty in the first place. Leave them alone.

And yes, you need an oil filter, regardless of what the manufacturer says. The "life of the engine" will be considerably shortened if you do not replace the filter. You do not need to flush the oil, that's just a waste of time - an engine that's been serviced properly won't have any residue or crap to flush out. Let the old stuff drain out completely. Hint - it'll drain faster if you remove the oil filler cap. Do not overfill it, just fill it so it's halfway up the dipstick, run the engine for a few seconds, let it settle for 10 minutes, and then top it up to the F mark on the stick. Also, run a smear of oil on the o-rings on the new filter, it'll seal better.

If you can't get the sump plug off easily (use a good socket with a tight fit, no cheap shit), get someone else to do it. The last thing you want is a rounded-off sump plug.

Oh and check you don't need some fancy low-ash oil, some cars require this and will break if you don't use it.

And please do not put anti-freeze in where engine coolant should be. In fact, leave that alone or you'll break it.

Don't go under the car on jacks. Put it on axle stands or ramps, or you might die.

The air filter is the easiest thing to replace, just make sure that all the dead bees and twigs don't fall further into the engine intake.

This is the sort of thing that should go on your Dating profile.

Pictures of you, greased up, holding a wrench.

You should also post them here for our amusement.

tbh I applaud you sir! recently I touched my car with a screwdriver and could simply feel extra chest, toe, chin and sausage hair sprouting due to the sheer, awesome manliness of it all.

I wouldn't put myself through the hassle of servicing a modern diesel unless i had to tbh, oil change yes full service nah. Also looks better when selling the car on to not have a blank for xx miles service.

Would go with a good local indy you trust

I've had several diesel cars including my current one.
Try & avoid supermarket / little independent forecourts. Especially the latter. The stuff they call diesel is pure shit and over time it will clog your system up and kill the power. If you've got the cash, replace the fuel filter if you've been using cheapo diesel.

wheres the proof on this .. there are only so many refineries in the uk and all the diesel and petrol comes from them .. so chances are the stuff you put in from esso or bp is the same from sainsburys or local indy .. afaik its all an urban myth

The branded fuels have different additive mixes. I drive on LPG so it's all the same to me, but when I top up with petrol I use super unleaded only.

But the base fuel is the same, no dirtier or cleaner than the rest

speaking of fuel, I filled up the alfa the other day. 43 liters for 350 km. that's about 1l/8km or 1l/5m or 1g/22.5m in island figures. Only cost 73.50 eur too. ffffuuuuuu
