I'm sorry but metallica are the shitest band in the universe, and I wouldn't even waste my time downloading any of their lame songs, let alone buying them.

Napster is good though, for getting songs which aren't out in the shops, or are rare. I'd never use it if there was a tune I could buy down the local Ourprice though.

i get a lot of my promo tunes off Napster, play them out on CD at the club and then buy the vinyl when it gets released.
(u can't scratch with CD's)

Thank you Napster, or more correctly, thankyou people who MP3 and share their promo stuff.

Since it is technically illigal to copy a CD (even for private use) without permission from the copyright holders, i'm surprised major MP3 sites have been able to hold out for so long.

I think they are citing some obscure recording Act ATM as defence.

Actually its not illegal in the states.

The US Home Recordings Act allows owners of a piece of music to copy it for personal use.

Now sharing it with other people is a different matter, though whether Napster is actually commiting an offence by merely providing a system that OTHER people use to pass round (possibly illegal) MP3s is an interesting question...

We have similar copyright laws int he uk, a user may make copies of music owned providing it is for own use and not being broadcast, hence the copy-protection first introduced into uk minidiscs - a digital-to-digital (from copyright cd to minidisc is possible) but the copyright bit prevents the duplicate being duplicated..

yeah i used to love getting all the promo, unreleased stuff of napster, cos you aint ever gonna get it anywhere else. I didn't bother getting stuff you could buy (unless it was off those shite but with 1 good track soundtracks and compilations).

It's stupid that they got rid of it, because in all truths using napster let me listen to artists that i wouldn't have normally listened to, thus leading to a purchase later.

I mean i got a whole load of eminem stuff of there (hehe) that ain't never gonna see the light of day.

In the end, artists were bitching cos teir new album was on napster a month before its release. Of course everyone would dl it, especially if its anticipated.
By blaming us they are ignoring the point, cos i'm not the one who leaked it onto the net/napster. They won't go after the one who is leaking stuff, that would require work. They just blame the ones who get hold of it.

(this really only applies to new stuff though)

Metalica and Dr dre (cos he's sueing everybody at the moment) can just kiss my arse!

Anyway, whats stopping ya recording shit of the radio neway?..... i never heard robbie williams bitching cos his new single is always played on the radio so he's losing sales.......

I love record companies, as soon as they might be losing money, they go all out to attack whatever it is that is the cause.

But when it comes to the consumer wanting a fair deal, they don't want to know. For example, I have an old cassette of an album I love, but want it on CD. Because I own the copyrighted material, I should be able to purchase a copy of the CD at production cost? I.e. for about 1 quid, because I already spent the money on the album years ago.
Can you do that? Bet ya can't :)

The real sad thing is the whole music industry actually grew last year. The reason the record companies hate napster is because they didn't think of it and its something they can't control.

metallica , has anyone actually purchased any of their "records". At least Napster are doing them a favour to save people money on there tunes.

Long live Napster.

Napster has grown really big, this has mainly been due to the extra press coverage from the court case :)

You're all a bit out of date on the legislation. Check out the Digital Millenium Recording/Copyright Act (1998 I believe, possibly 1999) if you want to see why this is actually an issue. If we were relying on the old Copyright legislation, Napster would have been dead and buried a long time ago.
