n00b with problem logging in

hey I just bought DAOC, installed it, patched it, and signed up for an account. I got to the server selection screen, chose a server and pressed play. It then brought me to a screen that said Loading...., blah blah, and connected me to "service." The mouse became active at this point, but nothing else happened. I waited for about 5-10 minutes and then alt-tabbed out. The manual says that a realm selection screen is supposed to appear after choosing a server on the first time logging in, but this doesn't happen. I've tried to connect many times, waited, and then proceeded with the alt-tabbing and manually closing it down with task manager. It's not locking up or anything (although it doesnt let me back in after i alt-tab), it's just not doing anything after connecting. A couple times when I've tried to connect it loaded but then booted me out of the screen without doing all the connection stuff. My setup is as follows:

P4 2.0 ghz
256mb ram
32 mb geforce 2 mx 200

It's not the best set up, I know, but it exceeds the recommended requirements.

I've also tried reinstalling but get the same problems. If anyone follows what I just said and can help I would very much appreciate a response.

I'm patched to 1.64 or .63 or something, if that's relevant.

The european servers are running 1.60.
Sounds like you patched to the US servers.
Follow the advice in the link above, that should correct your problems.

I didn't realize this forum was for the EU version of the game. I'm actually trying to connect to US servers. I tried doing the update.dat thing before I posted, not realizing what it was for, and it just caused some protection fault or something. So I'm still looking for a solution.

Disable your firewall temporarily and try connecting.

I don't have any firewalls running at all. I've tried everything that tech support has suggested, but still nothing. So far DAOC seems like one of the less.... functional investments I've made. Good thing it's only costed me about 30 dollars so far. Thanks again for the response.
