As the title.

I've tried several games, trying switching it off and leaving it for a while; nothing works. The unit itself seems ok. Any ideas?

phone Sony.

They will either have a fix or repair it for you (or tell you to take it back to the retailer)

I took it back to the retailer.

My 1 year old (4 days still within warranty) 40 GB PS3 and walked out with an 80 GB PS3 with a dualshock 3 controller. Fucking result!

The retailer deals with warranty replacements? I thought after a few months they tell you to go to the manufacturer?

It really depends on the retailer nath, and how difficult they want to be that day.

As Sony and MS do replace and repair under warranty, it is a pain for retailers to deal with it, but they are obliged to.

Although, some 18 year old kid tripped me up on the way out the door and spat on my face screaming "10 MILLIONS UNITS SOLD J00 L0S3R". :(

Smoking around your console can fuck the laser (apparently).

Not that you've been doing it, but if you have... don't.

It's also a good idea to make sure that it has plenty of ventilation around the side vents. They can get very hot very quick if the vents are blocked.

Right this has just happened to me playing CoD 5, it will recognise disks but won't read them. Now I could phone Sony but will be waiting til Monday at least, and I'd rather get back up and running before then. I'm currently backing it up to a USB hard disk and want to take it back to Gamestation tomorrow - only issue is I've lost the receipt. I still have the card I paid with and know roughly when I got it, but do you reckon I'll have any joy getting a new PS3?

Take in the bank/credit card statement with you, it will show the date and transaction details on there, that should be proof enough

I dunno Bodhi, i'm sorry to hear it.

Game said "no" when I thought I had lost my receipt (after a call to customer services), however they said "did you buy it and use a game reward card?" to which I said "yes" - they would have been able to swap mine out based on that without a receipt.

Spoken to Gamestation, they've said they'll swap it for an 80Gb model with DS3 if I bring the old one in with my bank statement. Just need to wait for me mate to get back with me old Sixxaxis and we're in business.

Aha - shoddy Sony merchandise :D

...

Couldn't resist. I still like my PS3 maybe even partly because it is costing Sony mucho :)
