My PC has officially gone titsup.com. On Thursday whilst plugging in a printer, my mouse decided to stop working. I fiddled abouyt with the connections - no joy, so I decided to reboot. Big mistake. I was greeted by the beeps-then-siren-of-death. The diagnostic LED on my mobo sticks at either C1 or 05.

Anyone have any ideas? The evidence so far seems to point to the RAM, but how can you damage RIMMS by plugging a printer into the USB port?

My system specs are :-

  • Pentium 4 Williamette 1.7Ghz
  • 512MB PC800 RDRAM
  • Abit TH7II-RAID Motherboard
  • ATi Radeon 64Mb

You could always try checking for clashing IRQ's.

Possibly coincidence that the ram is shagged, tried another stick? :/

The PC doesn't even get to a state where it can assign IRQ's. It fucks up well before the BIOS.

If you get the name of your BIOS (or at least the type) then search Google groups for "<BIOS Name> Beep errors" then you should be able to find a chart of all the different beep combinations and indentify what the problem is.

On one occasion my computer wouldn't boot for no reason at all, it was always a gfx card dislodge problem on my old kt7a, not on this occasion it worked only after I cleared the cmos, worth a try!

The problem isnt being helped by the fact that i have no bits to swap in up at uni with me, so if someone could send me a P4 3Ghz, i850E board. some RIMMS, and a Radeon 9700 it would be much appreciated.

Normal troubleshooting starts with unplugging everything, then attempt to boot using just mobo and CPU, you should be greeted by the "no RAM" beep, then plug in the RAM and try again, then the video card, you can normally tell if a signal changes on the monitor but if stays blank then the problem is serious.

Make sure you unplug the PSU cable from the mobo, this will reset any thermal/voltage cut-out that could have happened.

You can give it a good internal vacc'ing while you're at it, give those dust puppies a taste of freedom outside the case.

Also resetting the BIOS helps if nothing moves.

Sometimes just taking the thing apart and putting it back together helps, you may have dislodged something by plugging in the printer.

I had a similar problem with my abit board... it was giving the "your ram is fucked" beep... turned out it was the mobo itself that was fucked.... :\

So in short I don't really trust the beep codes... dunno if all recent abit boards are the same .... but mine had an AWARD bios anyway...

C1 means checking the DRAM.

05 means clearing the CMOS error flag.

I guess I'd try a new stick of RAM first. Or at least wiggle it about :)

It stops at 05 now. Anyone know how to fix that? Or shall I resign myself to ordering another TH7II-RAID?

You should have a jumper on the mobo for clearing the CMOS...you move it to the other set of pins, hold the power button for 5 seconds, then move it back and try booting again.

Remove the CMOS battery. Replace it after a little while.

Ah, you have to hold the power button. Forgot about that :)

Will try again when I can find the time and will get back to you guys. Theres one or two other things I want to try aswell. I have very little impetus to fix it however, as me mate has lent me his laptop, which despite being slower than my P4, is a lot nicer to use :/
