Well time to buy a new one then...

it runs fine on my PC, which is a pIII 866MHz with 384mb ram, and a 32mb gfx card.

perhaps it's just the AMD?

*compares*

Yours : AMD athlon 750mhz
Mine : AMD Athon 850mhz

Yours : 512 SDRAM
Mine : 256 ...somethingRAM (not too knowledgeable about the different types :) )

Yours : Geforce 2 mx 32mb
Mine : Same

Yours : Soundblaster live! 5.1
Mine : Crappy soundcard that came with the machine

Yours : ADSL connection
Mine : 56k modem

I'm playing in 800x600 16bit, with view distance at 200%, and while it's not running like a dream, it's doing OK.
Tamper with stuff and see if it makes any difference. :)

Is it playing crap offline or online
with a 56k conenction you might have a few lag problems as well as graphic lag, the best Geforce Drivers i have found so far are the 40.72 Det Drivers, that might help and dont forget Motherboard drivers too :)

Lowest spec I have got it working playable on was:
P3 600
384MB RAM
GF4 MX 420
SB Live Value

Have tried it on p3 500s but you have to turn the sound off to not have a slide show.

Runs at 640 x 480 16 bit in low detail with very few slow downs - ok a few slow downs - ok - dont get in a tank fire-fight :)

Memory is the crucial thing - 256 just aint enough on this box - that extra 128MB makes alot of difference - but with 512 that shouldnt be a problem.

Have you tried turning hardware acceleration off on the SB Live and also have a look thru previous posts for comments regarding the right soundblaster drivers and turning off hardware support for sound.

Turn off the sound hardware acceleration. From memory its under Control Panel->Sounds->Advanced

Turn it right off.

I've had a number of problems with 2 PCs running BF. One of them is a 1Ghz AMD with a GF2-GTS. I was getting < 1fps when anyone else appeared on the screen. With Sound Acceleration off, I get over 20.

The other PC is a 1800XP with a GF3-ti200. It ran fine but all the sounds were speeded up. It sounded like I had the chipmunks in my machine. With sound acceleration off it works like a dream.
