Worst film I ever saw. I finished it and realised I had wasted 2hours of my life, thank god it was on DVD and not video or I would have had to wait for it to rewind as well

Guess you're not a Lynch fan then?

Personally I loved it, it's not as out and out weird as his 'harder' stuff and even had a story you could follow (!). The only downside is the Hollywood bashing which seems a bit petty for someone of his stature.

I think the bit all the way up to the club and when she finds that weird key is a dream. I think it's all about her havign a lesbian affair with the big titted brunette, then the brunette ends it, and the blonde jealously hires a hitman.. I think.

I can't quite remember, this is all a while ago tbh :|

David lynch scares me like 4 sexy women who are about to molest me with their mouthes.

It's daunting, but at the end of the day you know it'll be magnificent.

Dianne was a bit of a loon. When Camilla ended their affair at the party she was humiliated. The memories from the party stuck with her because of it. She hired a hitman to kill Camilla. He would leave a blue key when the job is done. Racked by guilt after that she has a paranoid fantasy (the first 2/3 of the film) where she is Betty (a name she got from a waitress who turns up as Dianne in the fantasy) a nice beyond belief, talented actress, exactly how she believes herself to be, rather than actually is. Camilla becomes Rita, who is hopelessly dependant on Betty, a very comorting fantasy in light of the fact that Camilla had actually shown that she didn't need Dianne at all and that Dianne had actually been dependant on the charity of the more talented Camilla.

The Hollywood bashing can actually be seen as Dianne justifying to herself why she never got good parts. Not because she was crap but because Hollywood is controlled by a mad mafia.

The old couple were her parents / grandparents. They can be seen in the titles with Dianne when she wins the jitterbug competition. They represent guilt I guess when they taunt her at the end.

Pretty much everyone in the fantasy is drawn from either the party or the diner where she hires the hitman. These being the most important places for her resentment and guilt respectively.

Club Silencio is obviously where the fantasy is breaking down. The lesson being "It's all an illusion."

What I like about it most is that in typical Lynch style the two worlds, Dianne's fantasy life and her real life, have to be seen as two seperate worlds. You cannot completely reduce one to the other. For instance, how could Dianne be dreaming about her own death at various points in the dream ? Surely that hasn't happened yet ? Also why is Dianne terrified when she's in the limo on Mulholland Drive. The explanation you draw from Lynch's logic is because of what happened to Rita. But of course the hitman only tried to kill Rita in a fantasy which she won't even start having until she's been to the party and decided to kill Camilla. It makes a kind of logic in Lynch's dream-like world but not in an everyday sense.

ok what about the nut and the doc at the begining where they go to see the tramp who knows every thing?

That's another peice of broken logic. The nutty looking guy can obviously detect that something is wrong, both in the dream and reality. That's not a tramp he sees. It's just a monster which reoccurs in various guises throughout the film. It represents the vile deed I presume. It pervades Dianne's fantasy because she can't truly forget what she's done.

Also, it provides a good excuse to talk about dreams and to introduce Winkies early on.

Easy - the hitman left a blue key. She asked what it opened. He laughed. When the hit was done that key tormented her. It's no surprise that in her dreams it's an ominous sign and that she fears what it might open. Stick it straight into a common legend, it opens Pandora's Box, all the evil in the world, in other words what she's done and what she's lost.

Any more ?

I watched the start of this film about a year ago and fell asleep after the hitman and the cleaner.

I have just finished watching it fully tonight and am actually surprised I made sense of it all tbph. I am more surprised that I enjoyed it alot and couldn't stop watching it :). Easier to follow than lost highway, but then I'm sure I had a hemorrhage after watching that film.

One of the truly most unnerving events in that film. I won't spoil it. But it's at the party when the guy hands him the phone.

I think.

This movie starts with the ending, throwing scarce bits of info at the viewer, in a inversed order. Lynch is well known for his mixed way of doing things, so the roll of the events in this movie comes as no surprise. Full of hidden meanings, lost links which you discover only if you watch it really focused... a Great movie, overall.

Enjoyed it, and I fully recommend it.

There is this bit i can't really solve or link to the movie itself. The unnamed stranger with psychiatric problems, right at the start... the one in that bar... can't link him to the girl, the box... nothing.

Ps: Don't mistake this movie for "Mulholland Falls".
