MS researchers conclude copy-protection useless

Another new thread, sorry, just one of those days (ie. I'm bored shitless at work and there seems to be lots of intersting stuff on the web :) ).

Apparently a group of researchers working for Microsoft have just concluded that copy-protection, DRM, watermarking, fingerprinting etc etc is actually a waste of time and that vendors should instead just try and compete with the "darknet" (what they call all the illegal provision of content such as file-sharing, ftps etc) on convenience and cost

Very interesting :)

Yeah, I read that, and it makes a lot of sense to me. The current attitude of the RIAA seems to forget that you win customers by adding value and lowering prices, not by threatening to sue.

I've dropped down to the "sneakernet" myself, trading amongst friends who know each other...am I allowed to talk about this? They are just backups, honest.

I could have told them that about 15 years ago...

I store my backups offsite, at trusted friends' data facilities like a good little sysadmin should :)

[...] compete with the 'darknet' on "convenience and low cost rather than additional security."
Perhaps they could whisper this nugget of patently obvious information to the RIAA. Twenty years ago.

Hooray for research.

No he isn't. Off site back ups are a very good idea. Lessens the chances of data being lost because of things like floods and fires at the main site. Its important to back up all your music/films/porn/etc and store them at friends houses so you aren't likely to lose them. :p

Well done TDC, you're a credit to the community.

/edit: typo.

Are you talking about them giving up on copy-protection, or backing up pr0n? If it's the latter, then there has been a very good example just a couple of days ago...

The fire in a Dutch universitys server room, has taken out one of the biggest file sharing hubs in Europe! The amount of pr0n that has been lost must be staggering! I personally have some of my pr0n backed up onto CD, for safe keeping, however i think i could do with backing up some of my mpegs, because i'd hate to lose them, especially that 60meg one that i got off usenet... On a 56k, fs

/edit:
And that was UUencode, not yEnc! Fucking 7bit encoding

copy protection will never work.
The perfect example is the new TLC album, which was alledged to have the newest copy protection was actually available to download from the usual places within 30mins of an original CD being cracked.

On the subject of offsite backups you reminded me to take the latest server backups away with me tonite, thanks TdC :)

Copy protection on cds is insanity, assuming that they manage to make a perfect unrippable cd. All I'd do is connect my cd player to the pc, play and press record. Copy protection defeated. If I use digital out there's no loss of quality either.

Foot, self, shoot.

From Twente Uni Fire

This perceived misuse of Internet resources caused former Dutch education minister Loek Hermans to comment: "It would be nice if the students at Twente University would use their fast connections for information and education purposes, instead of downloading huge amounts of porn."
