MP3/Peer to Peer

OK, this is probably quite a flawed idea and I've no idea and not even thought about how it could be implemented but in theory, would people be willing to subscribe to a P2P network for a monthly fee which gives you access to whatever you like, but you can only download a certain amount of songs/megabytes?

Alternatively, you subscribe to a service and get billed for each file you download. This money then gets distributed evenly to the record companies who give 'royalties' to their artists.

It's a terribly flawed idea, probably not a new one and don't even think about asking me how it would work/be implemented because I haven't a fucking clue.

Personally I'd be happy to pay for what I download providing it wasn't extortionate, and I knew that some of the money would be going to the artist.

isnt this what napster tried after it was sued , i think it doesnt work because the majority of people just think well why pay for it when i can use kazaa for free. Maybe after the riaa have finished annialating all things musicly online related it'll become a viable option.

A number of companies are looking at such methods, although I do believe industry support is still weak.

The way the world in governed by money, I see this as inevitable... we are charged for everything; the only reason they aren't charging us for this at the moment is because they haven't worked out how to do it yet.

But if it did happen would you be happy to pay? I mostly use mp3s as a way of checking out bands who I'm unlikely to hear unless I buy the CD blindly and for the odd song I'm partial to despite hating most of their other stuff, so just for that I'd be happy to pay a bit of money per month.

Although I do think it should be kept free, but I think it's becoming inveitable that this won't happen.

I suppose I would pay if there was no choice; it would probably be top quality stuff and be what it says it is or your money back...

Kazaa

My friend's coworker recently got slapped with a $15,000 lawsuit for being caught sharing and downloading files illegally from Kazaa! She's just a college student so I'm sure that a settlement will be made with a much more reasonable amount, but i'm pretty sure the $15,000 is a warning/threat for everyone else using the "illegal" peer to peer filesharing.

So, I guess I'd pay too if I really had to depending on how much it is.

This might be a really stupid question.. but when new users are signing up to kazzaa now they have to 'subscribe' at a cost of $1.49 a month.
What exactly is it they're paying for?
I mean i understand the concept of paying to use kazzaa, but surely if it's illegal they're paying to use a program thats gonna get them a $15k fine.

why not download all the music you want and sent money off to the artists you like telling them that you like them and want to support them but refuse to go through wankers like the riaa to do it and would rather pay them directly for their music, if lots of people did this then maybe bands would slowly realise that they can dump their record labels and find new ways to distribute their music.. or something :)

Well...not exactly....if your at Uni...they can get to you...our Uni was getting complaints (albeit from film studios lawyers)...and filesharers (individuals) were cautioned or threatened with the sack....

The Uni installed a filter which blocks (most) p2p traffic...but when you consider my connection is nearly at t2 rate...you can understand why film studios were getting shirty about sharing.
