Ah, you miss out, the Hardware Forum advises Mozilla (or, more specifically the Firebird variant) as a regular solution to IE related woes.

Side buttons: Frankly, they should work. using a Logitech MX700 it all works hunky dory buttons wise. If there are problems, you can almost certainly find a plug in to enable them - Mozilla/Firebird is good like that :)

See http://www.mozilla.org for links to both Mozilla 1.4 and the superior Firebird 0.6

How easy is it to switch over to Mozilla?
Will mIRC open links in Mozilla instead of IE? (Last time I installed a third party browser, links in mIRC always opened in IE)
Do webpages display differently in Mozilla?

YEs, some webpages do - partially because Mozilla complies to standards and IE doesn't, and years of ignorance have cause some sites to be IE proprietry. However, you'll find that 99.9% of sites are fine ;D

I recommend Firebird rather than ful on Mozilla. You can even get yourself a "Luna" skin to make it look just like IE... heh. The interface is generally more customisable than original Mozilla.

As for some programs openning in IE - I'm afriad so. I can only assume that this is fault of the program rather than mozilla. Though I think that mIRC popped up in Firebird ok the other day. However, my Dock Weather.com docklet pops up in IE... so there's something nasty going on on Microsoft's part I think.

its mIRCs fault

I'm almost certain thats a bug in mIRC rather than in the browser. I seem to recall it was almost hard coded into mIRC to use IE. 6.02 (or was it 6.01, I forget) worked fine.

I'm sure I saw a forum post on the Opera webpage talking about how to get round it (with a lot of reg edits).

Personally, I quite like the 'bug', I know if there is a page that I cannot open in Opera, I just type it to myself in mIRC then double click on it, saves me having an IE icon anywhere to be found on my system =)

You should be able to change it in Set Program Access & Defaults so that it will open your preferred browser instead of IE.

Mozilla 1.3 with Modern theme.

It's purty :)

And, it fits in with my flashy silver taskbar.

Tabbed browsing is the daddy.

No, it makes no difference what your Default Browser settings are, its a mIRC problem, not a windows problem.

Or click here for a script to use in mIRC that will set your browser.

Code:
//write -c urlfix.reg $+(REGEDIT4,$crlf,[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command],$crlf,@="\",$replace($$sfile(C:\*.exe,Choose the browser you want to use),\,\\),\") -nohome" | run urlfix.reg
Its a mIRC bug. Type this into mIRC to fix it. If you have nnscript, type /urlfix instead.

if you want to stick with IE but features such as the MDI nature of mozilla (one window, multiple pages each with a tab) and popup/ad blocking appeal then give MYIE2 a whirl

That doesn't get around the standants incompliance, and the fact that there will be no new standards support until longhorn however.

Who needs standards when you have random page transitions? :D

Don't thank me, thank greeny (writes nnscript). I saw a reg-key fix there years ago, but on a forum search, I found that. He included that in a fairly recent version of the script.

Though obviously you should all go get a proper OS and a proper IRC client.;)

mIRC 6.0 to 6.02 did used to pickup on the default browser. I think there was also 1 version of Opera 6 thats used to work with mIRC 6.03.

Like I say, mIRCs problem, not Opera (etc).

Only problems I have with Mozilla are:

Can't get Java plugin to work.

On some sites, the text is really small and unreadable, so have to increase the text size to 120% :/.

Mozilla's handling of text size is different to IE. It's not without problems, but also benefits.

Mozilla is capable (using the text zoom) of displaying all types of text larger (included text that is hard coded to be small), there are some types that IE cannot.
However, I seem to find that Mozilla has a constant inability to remember the size setting and will revert back to 100% when you open it up again.

You may well find (and I admit immediately that this isn't ideal for "average joe") that you might be able to boost all fonts permanently by defining your own CSS stylesheet set to boost font sizes of the <body> element. I don't know if you can do this with IE or not.
